A Lesson In Why You Should Refill Ahead Of Time...

So, my doctor left a written perscription for me at my university Wellness Center that I never got the chance to pick up before going home. I had enough to tide me over for a couple months but ran out on the Fourth. Actually I ran out of the Zoloft on the third and the Wellbutrin on the fourth. I go into the pharmacy yesterday after I've already been off my meds for going on 24 hours. They tell me they will fax a refill request to my doctor but that it will take 2-3 days. I call my doctor's office to ask if they could expedite it only to find out he's on vacation for the whole week .

I call the Wellness Center to ask if they could somehow send the perscription over to the pharmacy only to find out the normal receptionist is out sick and the lady filling in can't do anything because she doesn't know what substances are controlled or not and la-die-da .

I wake up this morning and go to work. I've been off my Zoloft for the better part of 60 hours and off my Wellbutrin for going on 48 hours at this point. I would be a total wreck were it not for the Wellbutrin which has a much longer half life than Zoloft. I call the Wellness Center on my first break. The normal receptionist is back and tells me to tell the pharmacy to just fax the refill request to the Center. I go to the pharmacy to give them the message only to be told they've not been able to connect to any out-of-town phone lines since that morning (I live on an island in the summer).

 !!! !!! !!!

I return an hour before they close and they tell me they are just now able to connect to off-island numbers. I express my concern to the pharmacist and he tells me "I can't just hand out pills to people (as if I didn't know that)." He does say that if I show him my pill bottle even though it doesn't have any refills on the label he can give me enough to last for a few days. I only have my Zoloft bottle with me at the time but figure that's better than nothing. So now I'm hoping I will go in tommorrow and I can get both my perscriptions fully refilled. :coffee:

Sheesh. Talk about a cautionary tale. Don't make my mistake folks. :O_o:

Wow! Run out? I can't imagine that EVER happening. I have to get mine every month. They are not allowed to dish out more than that in one go. It is marked in my diary to request repeats, in plenty of time.

I can understand your panic. A hard lesson - I guess you wont make that mistake again!

Wow, I don't know how you did it. I take my meds at supper time and if I forget I can feel it the next morning. You amaze me!!!

Yes yes and yes!!! It is not good! I can't understand why this person did not LOOK IT UP, good grief, it's not that difficult.

I learned the hard way like this. I have actually recently lost a bottle of Trileptal and the pharmacy just issued me another full bottle . I had no idea where I put it, I finally found it in the cupboard, why? I have absolutely no idea. My pdoc was freaked out that I had done that and suggested I get a weekly dose dispenser and just maybe have my husband watch my meds for awhile, hmm.

Anyway, I'm sorry you had to experience that, I would suggest finding a new pharmacy if they have a pharmacist come in that is that ignorant, YIKES!!

hope you are feeling better!

Yeah its a terrible feeling. I did this once with my Temazepam and Amitriptyline. I knew I had enough Celexa to last me awhile so I put off getting the other 2 prescriptions until I needed more Celexa, then i realized that I didn't have refills on my Temazepam so I called my doctor, only she wasn't in and I had to go through a process to have the substance approved because its a benzo. To make things worse I had already stretched out my last dose of Celexa, putting everything off to the last moment. I ended up going back and fourth to the pharmacy a few times that day just to get everything settled. Wasn't worth it to put off my medication responsibilities.

Wow. I've had issues with insurance mistakes and what-not in the past, but my pharmicist has always gotten me a few pills to last until the hiccup resolves. Sorry about your situation!

Do NOT ever let this happen with stuff like Effexor. I had something similar happen back in the days when I was on it and I was seriously suicidal and unable to work the 3rd day after I ran out. I always had bad crashes on the 3rd day if I even just missed a single dose. Be sure to discuss this sort of thing with your doc since medications vary in their effects. Knowing you are feeling suicidal because of missing a medication is somewhat helpful in preventing suicide.

Getting off that medication took 9 months of ramping down and finally was so bad that I had to take a few grains at a time to prevent the flu symptoms that occurred if I didn't take any. I seriously thought I had the flu at first and was getting ready to go to the doc for antibiotics after a week before reading some online stuff and sure enough it was the effexor.

Yeah, they often don't make that clear enough at the pharmacy or doctor unless you really ask them. I do plenty of internet research on medication, that always helps. Even with that knowledge I still let myself run out once, thankfully I was only out for 2 days, but I quickly realized the stuipidity of it all.
