Thank you all for explaining why I thought the youngsters were taught that in school. I overheard two HS boys at a supermarket and was ready to send my hearing aids back to VA. First, they were actually saying words and not conversing via their devices. Second, every third word was something I thought I recognised. Not easy being a stranger in your own land. Cool, daddy cool... I missed that in 1958 also Oh well!
Wretched has been used in the south to mean nasty (female) for ages. "You wretched girl..." (Male doesn't get the éd. You wretch, for male.). And the pronunciation is almost identical in some parts. Ra-chad or Rach-éd (In others it's almost English, with the clear W and soft R in the beginning, breathy E, and hard T in the center. South Carolina & Virginia, I'm talkin to ya.).
I'd bet its a misheard version of wretched from a southern rapper. I'd guess Florida.
One tv-channel is Nostalgia net. They show newsreels from 50, 60 or more years ago.
The pronounciation is a riot and the choice of words is pedantic.
One thing it does make clear is that education for those who could afford it, was a lot better than it is now.
We all went to Grammar where Greek and Latin was mandatory (which everybody dropped after a year).
My grandkids get proper schooling again.
The generation inbetween seems to have lucked out when it comes to education.
Too many experiments on how ideal schooling should be.
Like many good things, they don't change much with time. A good education should include certain things; it's not an experiment. Learning to speak, write and communicate in a proper way should never go out of style. Kids have there fun and then they grow up and have to interact with the 'real' world. They do have to be taught how to do that. Glad I'm not the one that has to do that.
