This may sound stupid, but one issue I am dealing with right now is getting myself to believe that what I experienced as a child "qualifies" (!) for PTSD.

After all, I am nor scarred, I lost no limbs - not even a fingernail. I "just" saw several really scary things during the year I turned four, and was beaten up and threatened by my both parents for speaking about some of them.

Is it OK with forum rules to describe what one has been through? I'll try to be as non-graphical as I can, if such descriptions are OK.

Hey Ronja and welcome to the forum!!

"Qualifying" yourself for PTSD is something only a professional can do. If you have been diagnosed, then you have a life long, incurable condition. The people on the forum will share their experiences on how they handle their symptoms so that they may live a somewhat comfortable life. If you haven't been diagnosed, it's important to see someone because other disorders mimic PTSD and your treatment options may be off. PTSD isn't something that we can self-diagnose, you can have trauma and not ever have PTSD. Everyones reaction to trauma is different..what affects one may not another.

When you have been named a member, you will be able to post a trauma diary. This information is located in the video for new members and the forum rules. It just takes some time to process your registration is all.

Hope this helps and hope to see ya around the forum!

There is also an article about what is traumatic enough to cause ptsd if you hit the tab at the top that says home it will be on that page. Welcome to the forum. I hope you find the help you need.

Witnessing violence/abuse can be as traumatic (and sometimes more traumatic) as being directly abused. It depends on YOU. I witnessed a lot of stuff as a kid, and I don't remember any of it. I didn't realize how screwed up I was because of it until recently. You can get PTSD from witnessing something.

I didn't think the violence I experienced and witnessed as a child could possible cause ptsd. Apparently, it can, and did.
