With the CDN implementation, avatar changing has become a slight problem due to the cacheing of all content by the CDN for quick global delivery.
When you upload an avatar for the first time, it will work correctly -- then it will get cached by the CDN for global delivery. The cache lasts for 7 days.
Avatars are the only image that can change with consistency here -- as a result I have decided that avatars do not warrant precedence over the CDN and server performance implementations.
Basically, if you change your avatar here, it will take somewhere in the realm of 7 days before the CDN refreshes its cache to deliver your new image OR we have always made available Gravatar, which pulls from their server to load your avatar.
If you're the type of person who wants to change your avatar a lot, then you're going to have to use Gravatar instead of the upload method. This will instantly pull your new avatar and any change you make to your avatar at Gravatar.
I'm sorry, but avatars just do not warrant disabling the performance functions that the CDN provide, caching and delivering static content to users with blazing speed around the globe.
We have a solution for those who like to change their avatar a lot, Gravatar. For those who don't, just upload and leave it. If you want to change it, do so and it will update within a 7 day period as the cache refreshes automatically at the CDN.
