I'm not sure. I've never had a good psychiatrist in my life, mostly very rude ones who don't understand emotions well (as in, bluntly asking me if I'd ever tried to kill my self in front of my sister and mother and expecting me to answer quickly), so I'm not sure how I'm supposed to be reacting to them. I'll mention what you said about epilepsy drugs.. side effects aren't usually deadly. So, I feel it doesn't work it's okay. Also if it changes my mood, it's fine.

I've had a few very bad reactions to drugs, so I definitely am scared. But I would like to be able to handle things more normally..

Also no, you haven't overstepped any bounds! Thanks for your input :)

If you ask about a medication for anxiety or paranoia, she shouldn’t scare you away by telling you that they are “serious” drugs.

Agreed! I take Seriquel XR. It's an ani-psycotic. A pretty "serious drug". But in lower doses? It does amazing at lowering anxiety and helping to level off my moods and emotions a bit better and did one hell of a job stabilzing me in general.

Before I was diagnosed with ptsd I was treated for "depression" with Amitriptyline, the old tricyclic antidepressant (aka Elavil). That stuff was horrendous. Always felt like their was a blanket over my head and my mouth was full of cotton, and sleep, crap that's all I wanted to do, even when I was driving. The day I drove into the wall in my garage was the day I flushed them.

I was then put on Paxil , but after gaining 20 lbs in a very short period of time and getting those brain shocks, I dumped those as well.

Looking back I guess they did what they were supposed to do, I was completely numb of emotion.

Haven't been on anything since but I've been doing a lot of reading about CBD's. Interesting.

Wellbutrin (depression).
Gabapentin has helped but I actually take it for Fibromyalgia.
Abilify (low-dose) for irritability.
Prazosin for PTSD-related Nightmares.
Vistaril for anxiety.

None of the above. There is no medication for PTSD. There is only medication for symptoms o...

I was thinking this, as well. PTSD seems to be made up of multiple symptoms. It is the symptoms that are treated - like depression and anxiety, etc....

What has helped me more than all the dozens of meds I have tried is mindfulness-based stress reduction and a constant practice. Instead of decreasing or masking symptoms, it helps me confront and embrace them which, in turn, acts to significantly reduce them. I sometimes have a hard time practicing, but when I do, the difference is remarkable.

All the meds I've taken had side effects I just couldn't tolerate. Some made my symptoms worse, without my really noticing it until much later.
