Best Sedative/calming Medication?

Didn't want to start a new thread, since this one is about anxiety. Just curious someone suggested buspar. Anyone ever try it? Any relief with it?

They are tapering me down off klonopin. Not really happy about it because anxiety has been so high.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just throwing this out there. I know it's not exactly on topic but chelated magnesium really calms me down. I am not allowed zanax or any of the beautifully addictive and potentially harmful (with planning) meds so I had to find natural alternatives. The mag and vitamin e work wonders.

@Heather Buspar is very mild and safe with very few side effects. It takes about a week to work and if you stop it will again take time so it can't be prn.

Don't get a baby dose 5-10 mgs cuz it won't do anything 15 mgs once or twice a day up to 45...

I don't wanna say this but because of how safe it is, you can easily and safely go to 90mgs... shhhh I never said that.

Just curious where do you get this? Health food store? and how much, how often do you take it?

Hey. I buy Solgar Chelated Magnesium Tablets on Amazon. I think it's $16 a bottle for 250. I take 2 tablets at night about an hour before bed and if I'm going into a stressful situation I'll take one tablet about half an hour before the meeting or whatever it is. It takes about half an hour to take full effect but for me, it's a very noticeable effect.

@CrowFeather I did some googling and magnesium is said to remove toxins from the body.....So, my question is: how does that help with anxiety. No where I researched said it helped with anxiety.....

Just wondering how it helps with your anxiety and how did you come the conclusion that this would be a good thing to try.

Thanks.

Heather

@Heather google magnesium calms nerves and you'll get hundreds of articles. I didn't read this but it was the first result.

http://paleoforwomen.com/soul-crushing-stress-and-the-miracle-of-magnesium/

Here's a sample:
"With plenty of magnesium, you can go undergo stress and come out of it on the other side without batting so much as an eyelash. Without magnesium — and without magneisum properly balancing calcium consistently in your bloodstream — however, you undergo stress and never come out of it. Or, as in my own personal experience, you undergo stress and recover a little bit, but never enough, and then you undergo stress again, and again, and again, each time having less and less magnesium at your service to help you get through the episode. As such, stress gets harder and harder and harder for your cells to bear."

I came to use it when I kept trying to stockpile my benzos for a suicide plan so my primary doc suggested vitamin e and chelated magnesium. Chelated is important because of how the body absorbs the supplement.

Hope this helps @Heather

Hey.

I´m on oxazepam for anxiety, but lately my anxiety is so high that it doesn´t quite cut it anymor....

I don't know how long you've been taking it (it's a Benzo, right?), but there is a possibility you might be experiencing "tolerance withdrawal." If you are, you will feel more anxiety even if you up the dose. Doctors are often not very knowledgeable about this phenomenon and generally want to give you a higher dose, add another Benzo, or add an antidepressant. Which will often (everyone's different) only make things worse! You might want to google "Ashton Manual" for some excellent information on this. I should say that I am in the process of slowly tapering off Xanax and Valium, and I really wish my shrink had not added the Xanax when I was going through a particularly stressful time and feeling more anxiety. Speaking of anxiety, what do you think about the DSM5 changing the definition/criteria of PTSD? No longer considered an anxiety disorder!
