Pretty much put it down to, your dealing with a pack of morons. PTSD is a DSM IV TR diagnosis.

You should not be diagnosed however with anxiety, as PTSD is an anxiety disorder... severe depression comes under PTSD, though a shrink will likely write it down separately due to legal reasons for prescription of anti-depressants. Social phobia, attachment, insomnia, etc... are not diagnosis when PTSD is diagnosed, they are symptoms of PTSD diagnosis.

Hi Anthony,
yes I have always been aware that PTSD is covered and registered in the DSM IV TR, but it seems psychiatrists in this town are not willing to accept it as a 'mental illness', so therefore I am unable to obtain any form of support (networks, not cash).
I have thought about moving from this tiny place which is judgmental to the core, but I need support in place before I make that move, hence why I am here I guess!

You could always get a copy of the ICD-10 or DSM IV-TR, take it in with you and smack them round the ear with it, then ask them what manual they are making crap up from, so you can review their demented resources yourself in an attempt to match things up... Link Removed

I don't know if this is feasable, but could you go and see a psychiatrist out of town? For one consultation. Ask him/her to assess you, diagnose you, and then suggest what course of treatment etc they would recommend, and get a written report of it all. Maybe then you could go back to your mental health services with the written document. Alternatively you could ask the Psych if there are any self-help books or work books that they can recommend to you. That may help you in the meantime. Also I wondered if you looked into the possibility of telephone, or online counselling? I think such services exist, but know little about it.

Moving sounds quite drastic, but, if it's your only chance of leading a better life, it should be seriously considered. After all, one move doesn't have to be forever. Maybe a year or less (IDK?) of really good trauma therapy could be enough for you to learn to manage your symptoms. Then a whole world of possibilities will be open to you. Don't give up on the aim to move towards 'healing'. You will find a way, and you will always have support here!

I refused to go to the shrink on base when I was first being told I had PTSD, but had to be officially diagnosed, as the shrink on base was a Vietnam Vet, had PTSD, but didn't believe in it, so he refused to diagnose it. Went external instead...

Scott,
I'm curious as to where you live? Not specific, but what country? Obviously only answer if you don't mind sharing.Link Removed

Leona, I've read the book The Body Remembers. It makes a lot of sense. But it hard even though I know the reasons for my behavior over the years.
