Being that my family lives far away and I live alone, I try to get myself invited out to someone else's place for this holiday. Some years I succeed and some I don't. I made one attempt so far for this year, but it failed, as the people I inquired to, have plans out of town for Christmas. So, I am pondering about who else to accost. It feels like an invasion on my part, of course, but it is far better than sitting home alone and ruminating about past Christmases with my husband (who died in 2005) or lamenting that I was never able to have children, so I have no grandchildren. I do have a niece and nephew though, so I might call them, except they don't really celebrate the holidays, so it would just be another day in the life for them. My sister and I will talk by phone maybe, if she is in town, which often she is not.
It can be a lonely and unhappy day for me with no presents and no one to celebrate with.
I do have one other tradition: I buy some "Toys For Tots" and place them in the box at the bank that they have for local children. I at least have the pleasure of knowing that some poor children will have gifts on Christmas morning, even though I don't.
