Civilization V - Dummy Doo...

Well I beat it with the science victory just after 2000 I think. I then reloaded my save and tried for the united nations vote, unfortunately the 4 remaining civilizations were all guarded and of course voted for themselves (not sure if there is a way to change that anyway). I managed to sway the votes of 7 city states though, still I was short by 2 votes and I don't believe there is a way I can do better than that with this particular game, I'll have to try that one later.

Did you see the giant killer robot? So awesome, there about 1100 gold to buy, or maybe 6 or 7 turns for a pretty productive city to build. This mobile land unit can move really far too, does not fly but has a 150 attack, I haven't tested him out yet, I'm curious what his attack a city or defending a city drawbacks are...they cant be that bad though I would still march a few into someones city any day. I'm probably going to reload my older save, about 2010, build the robots and get my conquest victory. The culture victory seems like it's going to be difficult...but I guess you just have to focus on the right things, and not worry about how well other civilizations are doing.

Yer, I use those giant killer robots heaps once I get nuked up.

Its just getting a good nuke stash, because installing a nuclear power plant into each city as well is important, as it drops the cities costs massively once in, suddenly a city producing nothing starts producing crap loads of gold and good stuff.

I have been creating the games from the setup version, challenging myself to learn specific win methods. At the moment, I am focused on seeing what happens with the rocket launch.

Whoo hoo... I beat it on science victory, Prince difficulty and launched that rocket. Was Japan, only had 4 cities, but defence was my strategy and it worked. They nuked me, stealth'd me, rockets, you name it, the walls just wouldn't budge and when they did, they had near instant strength recovery again. One artillery in each city, each came highly promoted and deadly... helped me to concentrate on science.

I'm definetly going to go smaller next time I have been thinking. It was much harder to manage over 40 cities last time.
Going to try a civilization of 4 or 5 cities with cultural goal in mind, placement of the first city is going to be important because I'll want to be near at least a few different luxury resources, then at about year 1980 or so I will go to war with one or 2 civilizations. I think I will puppet the cities I take, this way its not a drag on my resources and yet they will provide resources for me, I believe that just because your going for a cultural victory doesn't mean you can't go to war, just pick your battles intelligently...

Deciding what to do with city states will be a problem however, their resources are a valuable thing to have. City states are always wanting to go to war with each other so providing gold to everyone you meet on a regular basis is going to be a challenge but will be a nessessary thing to keep themselves peaceful with one another.

Most the civilizations will just be at war with each other and will probably lose out on the latest tech because of their foolishness but there's always one or 2 that either expand to great sizes or become tech savvy sooner than everybody.
Staying on top of certain wonders is going to be important and so is technologies vs. culture.. And deciding on which cultures to adopt first is going to be an experiment.

I still think this cultural victory is going to be the most difficult feat, fortunately if you manage to protect all the city states, the united vote victory is something easily attained probably on your way to the cultural victory. Just save it before building united nations if you find it is going to be a problem...I think if you don't build the united nations in your civilization and someone else does, they initiate the vote so... right..

I kicked it arse on Prince level, using quick for the game timing, whooped it through science, and now I am continuing just to wipe them out.

I found that really looking at what I am buying, and whether its needed or not, and my wealth through the game trumped, followed by really reviewing my science choices to get the wonders that do most defensively... seriously, buying zero military, my cities have been able to wipe out entire armies as they attack, from nothing more than their defensive strength, until have the science of artillery, and placing one in each, with the culture policy to pay nothing for units within cities... using my wealth to buy buildings instead of waiting for them...

I just kicked its arse against 15 players... I am seeing strategy is king with this game, especially the harder the level. Choices of what to produce and in which city...

Well... I have completed 39% of the achievements... and I must say.... wow, this is going to be a long term commitment to beat this thing on harder than Prince level, being the "normal" difficulty. I got my arse handed to me quickly each time higher than that. Obviously lots more learning about strategies first.

I was reading they got some computer science college students involved in playing around with the AI characters used, and they took it from predicable and sucky, to really interesting and hard to judge. You can really piss someone off quickly as an AI now, and they act like a human would. Quite interesting and challenging.

I was just stoked I beat it on diplomatic and culture... and wow... seriously, if you change policies, be warned, you are in for one hell of a ride of anger from your population.
