I think I'm understanding it a little more. I purposefully watched and listened to mostly pro-trump media for a week. I usually try to balance it out but I tried to avoid news from other sources because I wanted to know what it was like to be more focused on only news some Trump supporters want to hear.

Yes, was hard because I'm still neverTrump... (I was neverTrump in 2005 before hashtags were even a thing....)

That didn't change and is not ever likely to change.

But I understand the draw to Trump more now. (It also freaks me out more now too.)

The news of Trump favoring media outlets offers a solution to fear and stress. A tantalizing solution. And in pro-Trump media, others are so demonized it was painful to listen too, but it's so stressful it makes me want a solution all the more. I wish there could be a figure that could sweep down and fix all that is wrong. I just know from so much life experience that it doesn't exist (outside of religious belief in God).

Humans fail.

Checks and balances keep the failures from getting too big. Trump wants to take those all away to save people from what they fear and feel real day to day stress about. ProTrump media and Trump himself spun the PTSD comments to try to say Trump being honestly compassionate about PTSD. This happened with a lot of different things. The facts reported were the same but the spin was different. It was like... are we even watching the same video of Trump saying the same things? But they would play tape and yep, it was the same stuff.

And a totally different reaction.

If Trump wins, I hope I'm wrong about him and he does run the country well. I have no reason or evidence yet that he will do that and a ton of evidence to suggest the contrary, but for the sake of everyone, I do hope I'm wrong.

My T had said that the appeal of a Trump or a Hitler, is that a lot of people just wasn't a strong leader to follow who will solve all their problems so they don't have to think for themselves. Fits pretty well with what you just said.

The video.... the only thing that surprises me is that it still exists. Is it the Mark of a true narc that he made that recording and didn't insist it be destroyed?

A lot of people in the GOP (which I was only very briefly a member of) say the neverTrump camp is responsible if Hillary gets elected. (This is the GOP so they are against Hillary, well some of them. The Bush clan is solidly backing Hillary.)

What they don't understand is that it appears it's the Trump supporters that are more responsible for getting Hillary elected by backing such a flawed candidate.

I expected a lot of stuff about both candidates to surface in October. A lot of people have been sitting on a lot of garbage about both of them... but it's only the 7th of October. We still have the rest of the month to get through!

I think the reverse is also true. Trump would have had less of a chance if the Democrats had come up with a more likeable candidate.

I can't help but wonder why some of this stuff IS just coming out now. Wiki-leaks had the info on Clinton's speeches all along, didn't they? So, what would have happened if they'd released that during the primaries? Maybe nothing, but there's have been a chance for a different candidate. Same for the Trump video. Who does it help to release this stuff between the conventions and the election? (Serious question.)

It's the "October surprise" effect. Usually "October surprise" is used for other events, but it fits for this too.

Politically speaking, the "best" time to really go after a candidate, or to seek to influence the election in any way, is in October, because they will least likely be able to recover in time before the election. During the GOP primary, those of us against Trump knew stuff like this that would likely be big stories.... in October. We knew they would sit on the very worst things and then release it then, because much of the media does not favor Trump, and he would be less likely to rebound prior to election day. People were trying to advocate with the media to release all of this kind of stuff and much more much sooner. They wouldn't. So many people tried.

One of the arguments reporter gave back is that if they released too much too soon, Trump would rebound anyhow during the primaries and win the general election because they would have nothing left to throw at him in October.

I disagree with that logic and so do most decent journalists... but they don't make the final decisions.
In typical election cycles, most people don't pay that much attention during primaries, and if someone is trying to sell newspapers, October is the time. The balance to that is the hope that the parties will actually vet their own candidates themselves, and pick decent humans. Trump was researched by so many and it's not news to most primary voters he is a misogynistic bully. It was surprising so many wanted to believe he could beat Hillary despite that fact. Same with Clinton. Her wall street ties are news, but the tangible headline grabbing transcripts are news now.

It does not help the country very much for media to wait. It helps one party go after the other party, it helps anyone who wants to do someone else harm and/or get the most attention to the matter.

The October surprise effect is why WikiLeaks waited too. They had the speeches long before all of this... I know some Trump supporters who were waiting and waiting for them to be released sooner.

Even North Korea gets involved in the October surprise effect. Every 4 years, in October, North Korea releases their most scary threats against the US in order to try to influence the election and get our maximum attention.

What surprised me with this story about Trump is that they released it on a Friday, which is when someone should release a story they want to bury. If someone wants to maximize the impact of a story, then they release it on a Monday or Tuesday and they let cable media freak out all week about it. Release on a Friday, and it has less of an impact.

It could be they wanted to release it before the debate, but if THIS stuff comes up during the debate, it won't be a debate, it will be a food fight. I'm hoping the Democrats take Michelle Obama's advice to that the high road.

Oh, I forgot the debate is this Sunday - good thinking! (I think my brain is trying to block it out!) Wow, I really hope they take the high road. His comments make the Miss Universe and vets with PTSD debacle seem so small in comparison.

Left leaning Media Matters did a brief story on a video of Roger Stone (pro-Trump media mogul) saying he was talking to Julian Assange about what Julian was sitting on for the October surprise... Dead Link Removed
