College Break. What Do I Do Now?

College is out for the summer and I have a few months of free time.

There are some historical places I would like to visit during the break, some books I would like to get caught up with and I would like to start going to the gym more often. But other then that...I am not sure what to do with myself.

I am hoping that I will be relaxed and have a great summer. Do some 'me' finding and hopefully go back to college happy and fresh in late August when it starts again. I am also worried that instead I will start neglecting my self care, my sleep and just become depressed becasue I wont have enough social interaction or mental exercise.

Does any one have any thoughts about activities for the summer?

You could find a student summer job, either paid or as a volunteer. You could set yourself small challenges to complete (like decorating. Or you could just allow yourself to do something nice for you, everyday - from a small thing like trying out a new recipe, to a bigger thing, like visiting somewhere you've always wanted to visit.

If you do suffer fro depression, I would recommend planning in advance.

In my experience, it is the transition between work and holiday that is difficult. I can get used to work, I can get used to time not working - it's the change between that feels crap.

I am not really interested in a job. I can see that causing more stress and issues then anything else.

A small thing everyday sounds like a good idea.

I do have issues with depression.

I am biased, but maybe take a couple of flight lessons. Flying is very freeing. An instructor could take you up and let you do some flying. Or perhaps go skydiving.

Sorry, Ayesha I just try to encourage everyone to go flying. I can not help myself. I hate the ground. I am terrified of heights, many pilots are.

Perhaps you can take an art class or learn a craft. I used to make candles and it was very relaxing. :-)

The thing with a job when you have depression, is that it makes you get up in the morning and you have to meet a deadline to get there. Even if it's only two hours morning cleaning, it keeps you in a routine.

But I think the gist of all of the suggestions, is that you can do whatever you want to in this break.

So what would you like to do?

I would love to visit more historical sites. We are moving to so that is deadlines and it is a chance to organize the house for the better and that always feels like it help my brain and my well being.

My mother in law will be visiting in 2 months. I can learn some Hindi in the meantime. She doesn't speak any English.
