I do wish more was taught to kids today about the horrors of war. Bataan death march. The murder and cannibalism on the islands in the pacific (happened to aircrews who ditched near occupied islands) The chemical and biological warfare in Nanking. The overall treatment of prisoners of war.
Then we could cover the island campaign's. Iwo Jima, Peleliu,Guadalcanal, The list goes on and on. I dare you to ask any kid in school if they can name 3 battles from WW2 or even one from the Korean war. Even one from Vietnam. They never heard of operation Just Cause. No clue about the Cuban Missile Crisis... Schools just don't teach this stuff anymore.
I think its good that D-Day is recognized. Same as Pearl Harbor Day. But it seems like the Pacific war was just swept aside.
I am proud to have served as a Marine. I don't really feel like one. I think the real Marines are the ones who never came home.
