I think another thin
What isOp ?

Original poster. ( the person who started the thread)

It’s my understanding not all counsellors in uk have to be registered, qualified or licensed. That courses to be a counsellor can be online, or day or weekend courses. Not all ’therapists’ are equal in attainment and standards.

Let alone approach.

I discussed with my therapist ( a qualified and registered therapist) what was privileged information here in UK.

1. I am not allowed to socialise with her with the guidelines of who she is registered with. This connection through mutual friends feels uncomfortable for me. A good mutual friend actually introduced us and if was discussed this would be an uncomfortable sacrifice going forward as we would not be able to both attend birthday gatherings etc. I KNOW my stuff is confidential from our good friend.

2. My therapist is required to telm my doctor if she fears I am suicidal again. She is required yo inform if I am at risk of harming my self ( and I accept in that there might me an untold risk that if I were a risk to others I would expect her To inform.

3. I am able to discuss CSA and SA without repercussion.

This makes sense because in many cases in UK you can report SA as just a rePort inform police. In my direct perdinsl experience this is possible with some SA in some states. In my experience in certain situations when some criteria are met this us not possible and police officers are required to tell the DA in some severities of SA. This still does not mean it goes to trial.

( rainn stats show this clearly)

So if thus all can happen therapists and rape advocates even cannot mandate reports in all cases. I do mot know how it stands with paedophilia but a report to a friend/ family member would be WRONG, police being only acceptable Route for an adult without agency intervention/ support as I understand it.

If you are charging money for your services as therapist, then claiming that as taxable income to the UK government. Are you required to be licenced?

Pretty sure that's how it works here in Canada.
Which would ensure that I couldn't just slap "therapist" on my door and charge admission to hear me pretend to know what I'm talking about.
This obviously does not prevent complete numpties from going into the profession and further buggering someone's already jumbled wiring. But it at least does allow legal recourse for hippa violations.

Is it similar in the UK?

That is worrisome :/

Yes.

It's difficult enough to find a therapist you connect with. My first was qualified but a mismatch and as I say it was a girlfriend ( a psychologist) who hooked me up with my therapist because she felt we would be a good personality match and she knew I needed yo see someone FAST.

The NHS talking therapy has long wait lists and usually limited to six sessions.

They do offer CBT but CBT therapy turned me down as unsuitable as too traumatised and no specific Ptsd therapy is offered in.my area on NHS.

There is aa high concentration charitable offering of Very excellent ptsd therapy in my area but it's only available to military or ex military.

I know in the United States all abuse is required to be reported regardless of age of the person at the time it was disclosed, there are two branches in the protective services part of DSS, Adult protective services, and Child protective Services.

When I disclosed not long ago, my primary care doctor did the reporting, as well as my therapists.

Most DSS's prioritize what to work on, at the time based on a lot of factor, including how long ago the abuse took place and whether the abuse may still be abusing.

My abuse too place 40 years and 55 years ago and beyond, it does not matter how long ago, the damage is life lasting.

But I think the OP is on the right track, cooling it with the T and staying on track with the PDOC, I hope the OP shares the concerns about the T with the PDOC.

But getting back to the OP's original post, It seems to me accepted practice is for the T or any other professional to ask for permission to make such third party disclosures, this is required by HIPAA in the United States. Even my own primary care doctor can't share anything without a release from me.
