General Desperately Seeking Assistance For My Husband

Hello All! I am a brand new member and found this board by surfing the internet. My husband was diagnosed with PTSD approximately seven years ago - he is a law enforcement officer and witnessed his best friend's suicide - - in addition to this trauma he apprehended, through running head on into a vehicle - the murderer of a fellow officer - in between these two events he was dragged down the road while his arm was caught in the window of a suspects vehicle and had to shoot at the suspect several times. He has been living with these events and the emotional turmoil caused by these events for YEARS without much treatment. Over the summer the PTSD started to overtake him more and more - he had to take medical leave and eventually took early retirement - which I believe is attributed to the struggles with the PTSD. A few weeks ago he voluntarily admitted himself into a mental health hospital and it was a positive experience, however - - - he of course, is still suffering. It wasn't until last night that he REALLY talked to me about the various thoughts and emotions he has been having and the connection was made to the prior past traumas - - bottom line is - I am now wanting to do all I can to find out what I can do to support him best - he is seeing a counselor and a psychiastrist - is on Wellbutrin and just yesterday was prescribed Seroquel - - any support/insight/suggestions for he or I would be GREATLY appreciated!

Hello Wife Wanting to Help - if you look a bit further up the main Board there is a section for the Supporters of those with PTSD. Come along and say hello in there - you will find that there is so much support for us Supporters from Supporters.

I am glad that your husband is now receiving help x

Hi Wife, I'd suggest starting with reading around on the forum. You can learn a lot about ptsd, what it looks like, what it feels like for sufferers, and both how supporters have been there and the frustrations we all have. It's important that your husband has been diagnosed and is getting help. That's the first step, but it's a long road ahead.

Welcome! So brave of your husband to seek help by admitting himself to hospital and braver still to open up to you so that you may start to understand. Heaps of information and support here. ((((hugs))))
