Diet And Exercise To Help Anxiety

I decided to eat healthier and exercise more to see if it helps relieve some of my symptoms of anxiety, this week resulted in better sleep, less panic attacks. Last night was the first night I slept a full 8 hours in years.....of course my week was a lot easier too with less triggers. I was able to bend without breaking when it came to compromising with people, I also forced myself to meet someone new, which was my son's friends parents although for some reason when I meet new people, I feel like when they see me, they see my brokenness, but was able to look past it and work through it this week. I also haven't cried this week once, outside of reading posts on here.

Great job!! I wish I could get better at exercise. I don't feel safe in my neighborhood due to an abusive ex. When I move to the beach I'll love walking there. I'm so happy for you that you slept all night.

well done , i too have found that eating better and staying active reduces the symptoms , one other thing i do which was recommended to me by a psychiatrist , if i don't want to take anti-depressants is to take lots of magnesium and a regular amount of good quality fish oil. The magnesium helps considerably with depressive symptoms

it is , it makes a world of difference. I did actually and its getting better, i am determined to move forward and will continue to do so. Next week will be better , but even if there's a hiccup, i will treat it as such.

@Gloww33, re: food: thanks for your inspiration, by sharing your changes!

For the first time in over a decade, I've gone off wheat, dairy, and sugar; (Already a vegetarian). Before, I noticed a slight decrease (10%) in depression, and a slight ability (10%) to think clearer, it was still a valued shift in my condition.

This time, I've noticed that eliminating wheat, dairy, and sugar, has stopped some (10%) negative thinking because I don't trigger memories of having food, especially sweets, taken away from me, as a form of punishment.

I have had some emotional realizations/breakthroughs, in my current crisis; these diet changes could've helped. Also, the disciple of the diet seems to have helped me direct my energies, since I need to have alternate food, more readily available.

Re: exercise, yes, a great stress reliever, distraction, and when walking in parks, a visual delight.

@darrenS, how much fish oil and what kind, and how much magnesium, and what kind? Thanks ahead of time.

Well done Gloww33, I will try some of your advice East healthy and go to gym. I can hardly sleep over 3 hours, sleeping pills are also not helping much.

@darrenS can someone take too much magnesium? What do you recommend for a dose? Do you take anything else with it? I totally want to give it a try. My old therapist has a daughter with bipolar and she was hospitalized for another with a headache that was excruciating. He took her to a shrink at McLean Hispital in Belmont MA who uses supplements. They put her on CoQ10 and it worked wonders. If she skips a day- headache.

I really want to change my diet and start climbing more and take up martial arts again (it's been a long time).

Sadly, my dad won't let me do shit. If I try and change my diet, he's all about the "What, are you trying to starve yourself or loose weight or something?"
Little while ago I ran across something called the Every Other Day Diet, which basically means you only eat every other day. It is actually intended for weight loss, but after loads of research and making up my own theories and researching them again, I've figured that not only will it (if you are not already) make you land on a weight that fits your body, it's also got major health benefits overall and is better for the human body. The only reason diet experts recommend 5-6 small meals a day with regular intervals, is that it'll keep the metabolism steady. Thing is, we're not made for a steady metabolism. The metabolism needs rest, it's not intended for working constantly. Of course, our metabolism has changed over thousands of years, but that part is still the same.

I decided to test it, and after about a week of eating every other day (and then eating whatever I felt like eating). I usually feel sick from eating, and getting to go a day off feels great. It improved some of my symptoms and made me feel better. However, I just happened to get sick from something that's going around and my dad blamed it on not eating every day. He said that he'd "seen me feel bad every day I wasn't eating the whole week", even though I felt better every day I wasn't eating and felt worse every day I was eating. My dad's just somewhat ignorant and can't accept the fact that I get sick from everything I eat and he does nothing to make it possible for me to try eliminate specific foods from my diet to try figure out what's making me sick. He's not even gotten around getting me tested for allergies that won't show up on blood tests, because he's too lazy to make a new doctor's appointment (he even didn't get me a new appointment about IgA-deficiency when I couldn't make it to the one I got first). Kinda irrelevant, but anyway. Every other day worked well for me, but my dad won't let me. It's annoying.

I also depend on my dad to get started with climbing and martial arts. It sucks.
