Discussing The Colorodo Shooting & Gun Laws

OK, do you have any concrete examples?
For starters, what possible legal reason is there for a person to need an extended magazine that holds 100 rounds of ammunition on their semi-automatic assault rifle? Do you need 100 shots to kill a deer? I don't think so. Does it make it easier for the crazy person to inflict mass casualties? Absolutely!
I believe the US does have laws on how many weapons you can have, and their types, ie. so people don't build arsenals up.
Our gun laws vary from state to state. There are some areas of our country where people can legally purchase as many weapons as they'd like.

Whilst cars are a valid argument and relevant in some context as weapons, again the difference is that there are age restrictions placed on who can drive and they must endure driver training and sit a theory and practical test of the applicable laws before driving on the road with others.

Yes, there will always be a minority who drive unlicensed, which there would equally be that minority if transferred to weapons.

How is this different than gun ownership? There are actually more stringent restrictions placed on who can own guns. Felons can drive.

I have actually found the level of driver education to be woefully inadequate. I am an avid skier and have worked at ski areas, and have seen a BUNCH Of easily avoidable accidents at very slow speed because people locked up their brakes no icy roads. You're supposed to brake going in a straight line, and accelerate or at least coast through the corners, this provides the best traction, yet I watch people and the vast majority of cars on the road, the brake lights come on through every corner going downhill.

You can buy a gun just by passing a background check, not being a felon, drug addict, and being of a certain age, but you can also buy a car without meeting ANY requirements. In order to hunt or carry that gun you must do exactly what you describe and take some classes, etc.

I think it has always been part of human history that people like violence.

People were watching slaves get torn apart in roman times, for entertainment. I agree that these things tend to de-sensitize our kids to violence...but even if video games weren't so popular, they'd still like violence.

I think it needs to be accepted that violence is a part of being human. We strive to be better than that, but violence is in all of us, and it's useful if we need to defend ourselves...and I do agree that they are being overly bombarded with violence these days, and it does have an effect. I'm just saying, that people have always been violent.

I agree with all these points. Most people seem to love watching the news and hearing about all the horrible things that go on in the world, I feel no desire to hear any of that and cannot understand how it is good entertainment for others.

I can't rationalize the sale and procurement of an automatic weapon. There is not reason for this type of fire arm except for military use. The general population has no reason to be able to obtain and own a weapon like this. But they are out there and can be obtained easily through underground markets.

But for rifles and shot guns, there are many who hunt and use these weapons in their daily lives. In rural areas having a gun can be a necessity as there isn't much that gets rid of coyotes and aggressive crosses (coyote/dog mix) other than a bullet..

Automatic weapon? As in fully automatic or auto loading?

How much do you know about the feral pig problem? THey are an invasive species, are quite destructive, very successful at propagating, and also quite aggressive and potentially dangerous to hunt. Semi automatic rifles are the perfect tool for eradicating these pests.

Melbourne seems to have an exhorbitant number of people who think that driving drunk is no big deal. I went out with one guy who thought this way (not for long) and have heard many people express this very casually here.

Cars are dangerous...that's all I'm saying. They may not have the intent to kill...but they do...just like guns do.

Cars kill far more people in America than guns do. Oh the horror, take away the cars, no sports cars, no large trucks, just no need to ever have something that can go 180mph, thats disgusting someone would even want that...

I don't know that taking the guns away would make much of a difference. Don't get my wrong, I hate guns, would never own one or use one. I just think that if the people in the world that would do such a horrible thing didn't have guns, they would just find another means to hurt people.

I didn't read past the second post, don't know if this was mentioned before. I didn't really want to read this thread because ..... well I think it's a non-issue. Should be a non-issue.

Yes, people in this world will always do horrible things, and if they didn't have gun would find different ways to hurt and murder people.

But..... how much easier with a gun? If the shooter (any one of them) had to stab people with a knife instead of shoot them, would the same number have died? No. Definite no. Any crazy psycho pissed off jackass can walk into a place and start shooting. Takes a lot more training and dedication to learn to fight with a knife. Most crazy psycho pissed off jackasses aren't dedicated. Most shootings are not calculated so well. Guns give these people a feeling of power. Take the power away.

Take the guns away. It's a non-issue.

Everytime I see a shooting I wonder how long it will take people to realize how simple this really is.

It is NOT impossible.

It would be along process. Decades.

But then, in 50 years, when I'm old and have nothing better to do than watch the news the worst thing I will hear is 'one man died by stabbing this week blah blah blah'

Instead of '18 children injured 7 dead in elementary school shooting this morning. Officials say this is the worst school shooting reported in the last 3 months.'

And then once the guns are gone, work on the next worse thing.

I saw him in court today. He looked all drugged up. he was not smiling. i do not who the lady was that was sitting by him. I am afraid he is going for the insanity plea. He makes me sick. I wish the news would quit showing pictures of him smiling.

He looked so out of it. A much different expression from the one when he was shooting the people. I hope they televise the hearing for him. I hope he is found competent to stand trial. This just makes me feel sick.

Thanks god we live in Germany and it is hard if you want to have a gun. There are special laws who is allowed to have one and how to store is. We had a blank-firing pistol for sports and the police came and checked on it, and how we store it. I think thats works good for us. Having a combat ptsd hubby he himself is glad about that law

I agree with all these points. Most people seem to love watching the news and hearing about all the horrible things that go on in the world, I feel no desire to hear any of that and cannot understand how it is good entertainment for others.

It's like some sick "filler" that they consume, so they can regurgitate it to their neighbours and friends and work colleagues the next day, for something to talk about and act like they care so much, when really they've forgotten about it 2 minutes after the story has been told. They fill up on fear in the process as well, and walk around complaining about how f*cked the world is and being negative, fouling up the atmosphere for everyone else.

It's sickness. But they sit there in judgement of all the "sickos" in society who go out and murder people and rape people, and they are sick too...but the viewers are just as sick in my opinion for getting some sort of voyeuristic kick out of the news.

Here's some epidemiology food for thought, including points that debunk the arguments against gun control.

"1-3 Guns are not used millions of times each year in self-defense

We use epidemiological theory to explain why the "false positive" problem for rare events can lead to large overestimates of the incidence of rare diseases or rare phenomena such as self-defense gun use. We then try to validate the claims of many millions of annual self-defense uses against available evidence. We find that the claim of many millions of annual self-defense gun uses by American citizens is invalid. " Source -
