DID Dissociative identity disorder shut down

I know I shut down completely sometimes and it feels against my will, but I'm not always sure if it's dissociation in its pure sense of just checking out, or if it's a part taking over. But the shutdown and inability to access - I understand that. I can't bring up parts unless they just suddenly show up, and then usually I'm not at all prepared to deal with whatever they end up dishing out.

@BuckarooBanzai , thank you for sharing your story. Makes me want to cry that your part's stuffed animal friend was threatened, but I think there are similar things that go on with my parts.

@theshadowoftheliving , I have a part that can cause that complete shutdown. It was probably the first clue to realizing that something deeper was going on inside of me because I could not do anything when in shutdown mode except sit silently in therapy. Eventually she started writing to my therapist and that started helping those kinds of shutdowns not to happen as often.
