Most of the time i was asked to say certain words for the comedy aspect -
I'm from the north central US. I've spent some time living in the south. Most recently, that was in Oklahoma. I went into a story one day, where they were aware of where I was from because they knew me, and someone said, "Hey, you're not from around here. Say something!" (I said "something",:woot:) Apparently this is something that happens everywhere.

I have a thick scottish accent and in any other region of Scotland other than the one I'm from people don't understand me. So you can imagine what it's like when I'm in England. English and Americans always seem to think I'm Irish for some reason. So I've really had to change the way I speak. I really don't mind American accents they just seem a bit out of place in the UK like they should be in the TV.

I really love hearing English people who've probably lived in Scotland for a long time using Scottish words in an English accent. I don't know why I just really like it. Aye in an English accent is ace. Or like 'I'm nae (not) sure'. Brilliant.

I suspect its more about what the English see as the bastardisation of their own language by the Americans.

LMFAO... We specialize in bastardizing ;)

My vet refuses to acknowledge certain "Americanisms". If I tell him the dog is on the couch he responds that we don't own a couch. We have a lounge.

Your vet now has my grandmother's voice in my head :roflmao: She used to correct me each and every time I came to visit "We do not own a _______. We own a ______."

For true, I moved about so much as a child constantly being corrected, that as an adult I have a tendency of simply pointing at objects and letting people infer the correct noun. Couch, settee, divan, sofa, chaise, lounge  If pressed I might add a whatchamacallit. Does wonders for my spoken iQ ;) The THING. "The dog's on the thing."...insert lackadaisical wave of hand in the general direction of the piece of furniture in question ..."You know. The big leather thing. That we sit upon. FFS 1100. 3 meters that way. You're just loving this aren't you?" :shifty:

France does try to control any changes to language. Yet like everywhere hundreds of accents and dialects. English and accent, oh, class culture is very important. Then you have spell check that changes what you write regardless of your intent and you have to insist on some words being from a childhood spelling "harbor" not "harbour" had to insist and then ask my self who the hell cares, and why should I if the word is recognized. Just being Irish. :p:D:eek::oops::rolleyes::alien:

@Cashew sorry that was a poorly constructed sentence there. Haha I really don't mind people thinking I'm Irish. What I meant is if I speak in my dialect people don't understand me.

Once my phone battery died and I was in England at the time. I asked someone for the time, they looked at me like a dog that thinks you just said walkies, head tilted to the side and replied with 'yes'. *face palm* so I really have to anglicise my accent up just so people know what the heck I'm on about.

@Missycat The Yorkshireism I catch myself doing often is using the word "what" in lieu of "that". So "Aren't you the waiter what spilled my drink?"

@NoWhereKnowWhere More than once I have seen a movie that has made it's way over here from Scotland that was subtitled, despite the language being used by all the actors being english. If I'm mistaken for a Scott, you for Irish. What do the Irish get mistaken for, Welsh?

@Changeling the French out here in Canada, known as Québécois. Often deliberately mispronounced as (Kee-bekker) Actually have laws in Canada to protect their language. And for reasons no one knows, actually think the word "tabarnac" is a profane word. Lol.
