For the love of chickens

Lol! Good one. Chicken updste: I now have 33 chickens, with 25 eggs in the incubator and 12 more coming this week. I had purchased 12 from a breeder and she sent me 18. I really didn't want 18, but I didn't want to throw out Black Copper Marans eggs. I understand many people would be happy to have so many extras, but I have limited space in my incubators. I think it will work out though, since 7 should hatch this week. For some reason, having had cancer makes me want to hatch eggs and plant seeds.

You bet DG! Make life happen!! Be a part of creating that life. Having cancer does change perspective. Not that you weren't aware before, but always felt so bad and in so much pain, now you get to be open to all the possibilities. Thanks for the chicken update!! Heart hugs.

Lil ladee is still going strong. I love Brahmas, they are so sweet and kind. I made the mistake of getting Wyandottes again, forgetting that they can be bullies. Oh well, the two are bonded to me so here they will stay. I have 7 hatching starting Wed. Yay!

Everyone is doing well, Tiny, Libra, Disco, and Violet. Pardon if I missed anyone. There's supposed to be a winter storm tonight, which means they won't want to come out of their coops, and who can blame them? I will have to make a path through the snow and put shavings down so they can get to their food and water. I could bring the food and water into the coop, but they always make a big mess of it.

And MrM ! Is he strutting his stuff or still a sweetie?

I wonder sometimes if you realize how much it means to me, to be a part of your chicken family. I get all mooshy inside because I know the love and care your feathered babies get. And I can feel healing from that. My own personal healing.

Only on this forum would this even make sense!

So thank you for the vicarious healing you provide. It means a lot.

And maybe soon you will let us know how you are. Heart hugs.

Mr.M has a new flock. He and Mini were sold to start a Polish breeding farm. They both made beautiful babies!

Here are my new chicks.

The first babies are 2 weeks old already! The new babies you can hardly see since they are under a red light. I had to get the red out. I have 2 more eggs that are hatching now, and 4 more to go.

Oh, I also have 6 more blue eggs to hatch. Goodness, I went overboard! There is an explanation. I thought I killed the first 12 eggs, so I ordered 12 more. Out of the first set of eggs, 4 hatched, and the second set only 6 were viable. In between those orders, I ordered 12 Black Copper Maran eggs and she was nice enough to send me 18. I dropped 1 on 2 of the eggs, so all three were ruined, but I had 15 left. Out of those, 2 didn't make it to day 18 so I had 13, out of which 7 hatched last night, 2 are hatching now, and 4 haven't started hatching yet. Phew, bored yet? I'll get better pictures today. I am making a chick brooder out of an old crib I got free on Craigslist. I used the mattress for a dog bed for my bigger mastiff.

When I was very little, my cousin (1 yr older) and I went out to our Aunt Jill's farm a lot. She had chickens and a lot of other animals as well, and crops, etc... So, one time my cousin and I each scooped up a baby chick, determined to take their sweet, fuzzy selves with us. Needless to say, we weren't allowed to do so. We probably terrorized those cuties when chasing them around the yard, but they were so cute. ? Fond memories. ?

How is Miss Violet doing? Hopefully she's not still cleaning the feed bucket with her little chicken tongue?! Unfortunately, I think we have something in common in that department. I'm working on it. ?

It sounds like you are very, very busy! I hope you are continuing to be on the mend and feeling better with each passing day. ??? VB

How is Miss Violet doing?

Very, very well! She is a cuddlebug and loves to "help" me when I'm out there. She is a friendly soul and thrives on attention. She lays and almost olive green egg that is so pretty, and she does so 6 days a week!

Total count for the Black Copper Marans eggs - 10 beautiful babies! She sent me extra mixed babies which I was grateful for, but would have given away had they hatched, and none of them did. I'm very happy with 10, and I'm still working on the crib brooder. I hope to have that done today. I'm also withdrawing from pain pills, since now that the cancer is gone, so is the pain. It sucks!!! Anyway, I hope to have pictures today or tomorrow of the new chicks and the new brooder!

Six more eggs to go, hatching on Friday!
