For the love of chickens

Copper Marans are lovely birds.
I have one.

And that really is a problem- I have to buy some birds because we are now left with one Hen. Tough winter . She’s practically a house bird, she goes to her house at night and sometimes goes to see the ponies but she likes the dogs and will snuggle down in a sun beam next to a dog . But she still needs company - I hate keeping social animals alone.

I love blue copper Marans of the Marans- but I am going to see what’s around locally. If I find someone local who would take her for her final years I might do that too.:(.

She sounds wonderful. Don't you think she's happy with the dogs as her flock? When I was tending to my mom's Appenzeller Spitzhauben who had been wounded, she was happy with the dogs and living in the house. She lived in a crate for awhile, then outside in her own pen with the dogs. I would gladly take her, I'm on BackyardChickens.com and not hard to find. You might find a home for her on there too.

I love the blacks, blues, splash and cuckoo. I have everything but the blues now. I have a blue splash, she is so sweet, as are all my marans. I stopped raising Polish since they yell all the time. They are a nice breed and are very friendly. I keep wanting to get more, lol.

Three more Whiting True Blues and the last one is hatching slowly. Very slowly. That's fine, she can take her time. I set up what my son calls a ghetto coop for the first 4. I took pieces of an outside coop and attached it to their tote, so now they can roost on the branch I put in there and look out into the room. If it were warm out I'd let them have some outside time.

Everyone is hale and hearty. I have 18 chicks that are all around 6 weeks old, Whiting True Blues and Black Copper Marans. I have 33 eggs in the incubator. Birchen chocolate orpingtons, easter eggers, buff brahmas, buff and lavender orpingtons. I have a hen that keeps hiding eggs but she won't sit, so I have to wait til she sits to give her eggs. It will be an exciting summer!

What kind did you get? Pictures?

I’ll get pics when I collect. It’s someone I haven’t bought from before so there is a chance of course they might not be birds I’ll buy. He has various hybrids and I have said I’m not fussy but I’d like two each of a couple of varieties. In a tiny flock I like to have birds that lay different colour eggs so I can tell at a glance from the eggs who is laying - ? and cut down the options of who isn’t. So - it will be a variety . And limits my numbers nicely.

Here is LB ( last bird - black copper maran) watching me put straw into a house today though. She also helped me cut the grass. This house homes about twenty four birds over night comfortably but has a tiny run- only ok for half a dozen birds being medicated. We free range unless worming or if the hunt is coming very close. But I hate keeping birds in during the day .

Very cute! I have several birds who supervise. Eva is a dark brahma, very large, and would jump up on the board we were cutting to make a new coop. She would scare me since she wanted to look at the saw close up. Doris, who was my first hen, likes to know what's happening at all times. Don't even think of putting in a new coop already built, she wants to pick the colors. She is quite a pet and spoiled, but she is my special hen. She should go broody soon.

I love nosey birds.

I really miss Cochins. Our Cochins all had an adorable habit of sitting out front of the house to watch the sun set and then going in, far later than other birds. This ‘mindful observance’ always really made me love them . No good breeders around here though .

Apart from another copper maran - all birds I have never had before ( I was more into old breeds) 2 bluebells, 2 whites, 2 emeralds. I’ll get pictures tomorrow:)
