With the Aussie system you either worked your way to Warrant Officer Class Two (WO2) then Warrant Officer Class One, WO1 the highest in the Non Commissioned ranks. From WO2 or Wo1, it was just a hop, skip, and a jump straight to senior Captain, skipping six years as a LT and the first couple of years of junior Captain. Most finished as a Major, and not many were put in charge of a Squadron, they were mostly placed in the OPS area.
I think anyone who does 20 years regardless of rank needs to be applauded. Generally you have to be worth your salt. I knew a Corporal who didn't want any further promotion, he would have made an awesome SGT or WO2, but didn't want the responsibility. You could turn to him for advice though.
My step-daughter wants to be an military policewoman and is enlisting soon.
Cheers
