Old Dreamer

New Here
You can call me Old Dreamer. I'm 50+ years old and I work in New England. My adopted daughter (in her 20's) is a victim of PTSD. We're looking for support.

Hello and welcome! I am also in my 20s and have PTSD. I will try to help with any questions you may have and you will get a lot of support here! :)

Hi Dreamer. I am not a supporter myself but I imagine my family must want to scream at me most days. I think it must be as difficult for the supporters as it is the sufferer. I hope you find the support you are looking for on here. Your daughter is lucky to have a dad that cares so much.

Hi Old Dreamer, I like your username :) I hope you and your daughter both find the support you need both from here and from other sources of support.

It's been such a mix. We adopted her in December and right before the adoption (she's also blind) she mentioned she had PTSD and only had nightmares.

It was wonderful for two months. She had her first Christmas with us. But Oh God did she hold things back! In the past three months its all come out. To put it mildly, my wife and I are reeling from one tragedy to another.

Four weeks ago she introduced me as "the best Dad in the world" and four weeks later I drove past her apartment (it turn out she was being moved to a transitional facility) and she took out a restraining order against me that was filled with....well very nasty things that are not true. I was really shocked and it hurt. Thank God her therapist takes my calls and keeps reasuring me it is not our fault. I have her on speed dial now (she's been a great help).

We're in therapy too now. Only our dogs are not in therapy. You have to keep a sense of humor here. It has not been easy. We really love her. But I was walking dead the first two weeks without therapy(I had never needed it before)!

She's been institutionalized five times since Feb 2. Each time is another reveleation: from occasional nightmares we have entered a world of night wanderings, cutting, medicine overdoses, suicide attempts, identity disorders, disassociation, transferance and other interesting issues. And I found out that this last event that occurred four weeks ago I was the "trigger" (that's another new word I learned). Since then she will not let us contact her. And the therapists agree that this "had to happen."

Her birth father abused her for many years and did violence to her and her mother. I guess the new Dad has had the transferance target was attached from day one. She's a victim of complex trauma.

My wife and I are just good people. I'm educated (I have a Ph.D in the humanities and my wife is a professional) but not in psychology or therapy. It's been a new world for four weeks. I'm learning and we'll never give up, but its a humbling experience how little we can do. It may be months before she wants to see us again.

Guess I just wanted to vent a bit. We know this is not her fault. But Oh God it is so hard. Love is winning, but everyday is a battle. Thanks for being here. I hate to ask if anyone knows a good book I can read about similar situations. But it would help. And just letting me here that we're not alone is a big help.

Our other two kids (adopted 20 years ago) were an abused sibling group ages 3 1/2 and 5. They never had any of the problems we were told to expect and will both graduate from college next year.

Guess its time to make up for it!

Oh yes.. and I read your responses. I really want to thank you. I kind of got teary. My God I've really had to hold things together this month.

I teach and final exams are here. I tutor and I have a few organizations on and off campus I volunteer for.

At the same down our daughter was breaking down, my mother in law (we take care of her. She also has psychiatirc issues at 85 and her husband, who passed away last year, had PTSD since WWII) was battling a MRSA infection.

My daughter was in one ER room in a dissassociative state ready to be transfered by ambulance to a psychiatric unit and my wife with her mother in the next room having surgery (and more the next day).

Its been three months of things like that without a break. And next month my son's donating bone marrow and I have to go with him to a hospital out of state.

At least I'm never bored! If things every calm down, I should write a book!

Sorry you went through so much, it is hard to keep with people that have it. I try to hang on to the ones that stay with me even though I try to push them away. I know it dosen't make sence. Sorry I don't know of any books like that.

That's OK. I've only been pushed away once in the past year. It hurts, but I don't lose hope. And I know it doesn't make sense. But knowing what to expect reduces the pain now. Hang in there Smith!

Welcome Old Dreamer. Welcome, and Welcome again to the forum!

I am near speechless, but I am very glad you found this forum for support. Please do vent. Vent as much as you need. I will be listening as much as I can, and there will be others here that can be supportive. I will be on the lookout for books having to do with a similar situation. Everything about your introduction has touched me and I will be thinking often of your family and am sending you'all hugs for now.

Again, keep opening up and venting and talking. Discuss and start threads asking any questions that you have. There is a lot of support for you and your wife and you need it.

Take it easy Old Dreamer,

goingonhope

Oh I am hanging, to afraid to let go and to tired to climb up, just hanging around.....lol :p I know for myself I push away people that love me or care about me because my world is so %$#@ up I don't want to hurt them or see them get hurt. I don't know if thats why she did the things she did.

Hi Old Dreamer! You found the right place! This is a healing place. There is so much to read here and also to talk with people who know trauma personally. For me, it's all about coming out of the "trauma closet" and talking about it and sharing your feelings.;)
