so I landed a job as a housekeeper at a hospital! my student loan came and I have enough to get an apartment. the bad news is that before I can start working I need to be able to prove my identity with a birth certificate. which means i'll have to call my parents and ask them to send it to me. I REALLY don't wanna take a chance of having to talk to mommie dearest. oh God I'm freaking out :(

Dearest @Melody coates you have my biggest :hug:s on this one. I have the same problem in not being my Mother, My EX Wife has mine.

That's great news!

Is it possible to get a certified copy from the authorities (county records) or something? It shouldn't be too much of a red-tape hassle as long as you can prove your identity some other way (drivers license, SSN, etc.).

Excellent news, Melody! Congratulations!!!

Here in Texas, we would get birth certificates at the County Records office of the county we were born in. The last time my sons ordered one, they were able to order on-line. Bet you can at least find the price on line. I think... My sons (30 and 34) and I get along great, but they like to take care of their own business. I ordered my birth certificate from Illinois back in the bad old days of snail mail...

Sure hope that is the biggest glitch you run into on the new job, Melody. Good luck!!!

I am SO happy for you as I know you were facing possible homelessness. This is GREAT news! I know that you are facing an issue with the birth certificate, but there are ways around it if you cannot talk to your parents at all. Good luck!

Jobs are used to there being delays with birth certificates, as most youngish people don't have them in a safe deposit box with other important documents, yet. A passport will substitute, if you have one, in most cases... And, as others have said, it's wicked easy these days to pick up or order a certified copy.

What it's for, is to prove citizenship. Which is why a passport will work when a drivers license doesn't. As long as you tell HR you have your cert copy on order, they usually let you start right away / just want it on file within 2-4 weeks.

Hi Melody,

Would they take your SSN instead? I second what @FridayJones said. Tell them you are not in contact with your parents and you are obtaining a copy and just give HR an update on the progress.

It's perfectly reasonable and I'm sure they will let you start as long as you have some form of ID.

Usually jobs just ask for my license and Social Security Card. Either way, it's possible to get these documents without dealing with your family.
Congrats on the new job!!! :)

That's wonderful! I'm so happy that worked out for you. Those jobs pay pretty well too, at least here they do.

I second what others have said, you probably don't need to talk to your mom. The cost of the certificate shouldn't be too much. If it turns out that you have to get one from her for some reason, could you write instead of phoning?

Hi Melody, like everyone said, you can get it yourself. I just went to the Department of Health and asked for one. I paid $25 for a copy and they printed it off right there for me.

There may or may not be a fee; depends on your county and how strapped for cash they are. But like @haltija said, it might be $25 or something. But once you have it, you'll never need pay for it again or ask for your parent's copy again.

Thats fantastic news! Congratulations. Hope you can order a new copy of your birth certificate without to much trouble.
