Had A Dream I Killed Myself

Ok, so amongst all the other nightmares I had a dream last night that I shot myself in the head. This freaked me out, and wondering if anyone has an interpretation. I have been feeling overwhelmed with the nightmares I've been having, but I would never kill myself. I would never do that to my family. I'm afraid to tell my therapist about this, because I don't want her to think I would actually do something like this. This really sucks. Could there be a different interpretation to this sort of dream? Thanks for any advice.

Well, first I would say that dreams are not literal. Dreams are completely subjective, what a dream might mean to me might be completely different for you. It's what they represent for the one having the dream and although the action in th edream is huge, it could represent something small or vice versa.

I do not know how helpful this will be, but I checked a dream dictionary and it stated the following - "To dream that you commit suicide represents your desperate desire to escape from your waking life. You may be harboring feelings of guilt that you cannot get over and thus turning the aggression on yourself. Alternatively, the dream suggests that you are saying good-bye to one aspect of yourself and hello to a whole new you. It is symbolic of a personal transformation or a new stage in your life". Sometimes dreams are just dreams or a manifestation of our fears.

I would discuss it with your therapist. But if you are not having active suicidal thoughts, a dream doesn't have to mean anything. But I think you should still discuss it with your therapist. Just my opinion.

Wish you the best!!!

"And I find it kind of funny. I find it kind of sad. The dreams in which I'm dyin' Are the best I've ever had"

Song - Mad World by Tears For Fears

This, for me is unfortunately is all too true, all too often.

Yes, I agree with jmni. Please talk to your therapist about it. If they don't know what is going on with you, they can't give you the help you may need.

You know, I believe I remember reading that, a lot of times, death in dreams symbolizes change or rebirth.

In the dream after the act, what were your impressions? Sometimes in my nightmares/dreaming activity it is not what I do but the thoughts or feelings that burst forward to shock me into some sort of epithany. It crosses the barrier from my subconscious to my conscious. I think a lot of my nightmares are like that now because I have so many things that are suppressed or totally blank.

(Barbarian, thanks for the retro tunage, I love that song and hadn't heard it in a very long time.)
