Thanks for all the wishes - the Cdn story actually isn't really a story - no pilgrims, etc. It's just a harvest festival combined with a religious holiday no one really knows still exists (which has to do with giving thanks). We celebrate in more or less the same way (turkey and family, though we usually do salmon). But it doesn't have the colonial, pilgrims, etc. history. It's harvest, food, and family and is sort of linked to old European harvest festivals.
And we don't celebrate Columbus day at all- not a holiday here. I was always told our Thanksgiving was earlier because we are further north (shorter growing season), but after doing some reading it looks like the day actually moved around a while before it got pinned down- so it may be a bit more random than that. It's always a Sunday/Monday - some people celebrate on Sunday (and use Monday to recover) and some celebrate on Monday (known as Thanksgiving Sunday and Thanksgiving Monday respectively).
The First Nations-non First Nations interaction is similar (maybe this is what Medic72 refers to) to the US and Australian experiences, but not linked into Thanksgiving as a holiday.
