Maybe its an explaination I offer to myself to rationalize what happened over there.

A very interesting thread indeed. Both inspirational and logical as well. Humans, what strange beings we are. On the one hand we seek the infinite and then try to explain and understand it all.

I lost belief in a lot of things. We had a member of the cloth who served in Vietnam and was know for carrying an M16. He never shot anyone, but he said that if anyone ever disturbed him giving last rights they were in for it.
I asked him once about war. He said the Bible has been interpreted over time just like the Koran. All in all both talk about death and wars. Each to their own.

Just reminded me of a padre that got caught in a photo with an SA80, he got removed from our AO; legend.

Anyone know what was before the big bang?

Trying to understand life, the universe and God for humans is like an ant trying to understand quantum theory (which we don't even understand fully yet). My faith has never wavered, although I have come up with some questions that at times disturb me. I understand that all the bad stuff that humans do is because we have free will. I don't blame God or any other spiritual being good or bad.

As for priests, rabbi's, and such in the military, I have no faith in any I have ever met. They are simply military men in uniform that perform a job they are paid to do. People who get paid to be "Men of God/Women of God" are corrupt in my mind. It should be an unpaid calling instead of living/sponging off the faithful. I acknowledge in a military setting this would present problems, but I feel they are simply muppets to the military mission.

I agree about ants, find no reason why they don't work together or why one without the other, maybe the real book beaters have that issue?

I got a feeling God has nothing to do with this place. Not helping, not hurting. Just saying, like my Dad used to say.

"HEY, WHY DON"T YOU USE THAT THING BETWEEN YOUR EARS!!!"

There is a great essay by Charles Sanders Peirce (pronounced purse) about the difference between faith, belief, and doubt.

Doubt is the first principle of belief and of the three the most credible. When you say you Believe, you are really saying you Doubt. Otherwise, you would say I Know.

Faith has no basis for its statements about truth and falsity. It just Is, at least in your mind. A marvelously neat argument.

"Faith is believing what you know ain’t so."

"Man is the religious animal. He is the only religious animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion – several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself and cuts his throat, if his theology isn’t straight. He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother’s path to happiness and heaven."
Mark Twain

Nothing has changed for me. In fact, I was just reinforced as a barbarian to begin with.
