As a child I liked drawing, painting, listening to music, crafts, etc. Now, when I try to do them I get very frustrated and I start remembering the insults and the put downs. How did you overcome the criticism?
I am still working on this but this is some of the things that I do...
First realise and accept that it is my mothers voice/criticism, not my own. And, very importantly to me, when someone else like my husband criticizes I need to stay objective and realise that he made a "comment" and did not mean it as a criticism.
Then over time I started to understand that if I did enough self soothing early on (eg after doing something anxiety producing) then I could recover relatively quickly. If instead I denied it pushed through, I would end up in the fetal position not coping, and if I denied it and pushed through that, I would end up with suicidal thoughts which scare me.
Learning how useful and productive taking a self soothe activity was, really helped me be more comfortable using them.
I also used an external reason of my family in the sense that I am a much more available mother when I self soothe regularly and I want to be available as possible to my children. I also want to model healthy self care to my children.
Hope that helps.
