Undiagnosed Help Please - Veteran With Possible Ptsd

Just chiming in here to say that I was misdiagnosed with depression and anxiety and that no one diagnosed me with PTSD until last year (I'm 38) and I've been in therapy on and off for 20 years! But, the core things still work to alleviate depression/anxiety also work for PTSD (things like meditation and yoga), so it may be worth looking into those types of things, too, while you're figuring all of this out, as they may have positive effects that could help a smidge.

Best of luck and thank you for all that you have done in your line of work.

Hi thank you all for your time in replying, I haven't seen the dr yet but will update as soon as I can, again I thank you all for your time.

Just wanted to chime in and say, definitely go see another doctor. Don't give up. I'm sorry this has been so hard for you! I'm a parent, too, and I can relate. But keep reaching out for help, it will get better.

Hang in there,
D

Hi, Lost. My PTSD is not combat related, but the Army (post Viet Nam) and the VA have been among my important therapy sources.

I have found it helpful not to get lost in labels and terminology within my own therapy. Psychiatry is still an infant science. There are no physical proofs of any of the diagnosis'. Yet, something keeps spinning dangerously out-of-control in my life. My personal recovery proceeds more efficiently when I focus on the symptoms rather than the labels. What other folks choose to call my condition is of no concern to me. Bipolar? Depression? General Anxiety Disorder? Another set of etceteras? Hey, I am multi-lingual and multi-dialectical. One name is as good as another.

Hi just a update the dr I saw said its moderate depression and not PTSD so what is the difference? Sorry if anyone things I'm being rude asking the question.

@Lost1225 Did you read the link that Dmerish posted?
Depression is a component of PTSD. Here is the link to the area in this site that describes it: [DLMURL]https://www.myptsd.com/c/wiki/posttraumatic-stress-disorder/[/DLMURL] But please don't self-diagnose.
Whilst it's a lengthy article, it will really help to answer your question, including the reasons why a differential diagnosis such as depression may be given.

Lost,

I just wanted to say, yes, read the document above. That's really good advice. Then think about... do you have flashbacks? Hypervigiliance? Triggers? Other signs of PTSD? Not to self-diagnose, which is a bad idea... but, because the doctors sometimes get it wrong and you have to advocate for yourself. I was diagnosed as depressed for years and years and everything they did to treat my depression made everything so much worse. But they were the experts, so I kept following their advice. And all the while, no one was dealing with my PTSD, including me, so it got worse and worse, too.

So... perhaps the doctors are right, and it's just depression. Try anti-depressants. They didn't work for me, but I know they work for lots and lots of people. Get therapy for depression. Tell your therapist about your issues... and perhaps, with some more information, your therapist may realize you have PTSD or may be able to confirm for you that you do not.

The thing is... you're struggling, you're going to doctors, you're trying to identify what's going on. No one does that just for fun! There's obviously something going on that's not good, and you want to fix it and you're reaching out for help. Those are all very good and brave things. Okay? Unfortunately, dealing with doctors can be hard... so you have to advocate for yourself. That doesn't mean fight necessarily... hey, maybe they are right, it's depression and some anti-depressants plus some therapy will work. If so, great! If not, keep reaching out for help. Keep asking questions. You know how you feel. Fight for yourself.

I hope this helps, you're not the only one who's gone through something like this,
D
