Sohi

He is a cop with combat PTSD. He was nearly killed at work by gunfire. Person missed. He will flip flop between I am fine, and I'm struggling. I laughed about something entirely unrelated, when we weren't even talking about what happened, and he was like its not funny. Someone tried to shoot me!
I apologized, even though I didn't do anything knowingly wrong. And left him alone until the next day.
Now he keep going back and forth between ok, and not ok, and I don't know how to act.
A friend who is also a combat vet, said don't leave him alone, he will get depressed, if you pull away now.
I don't know how I am supposed to act right now. He isn't talking to me today, so I will leave him alone. I don't want to push, but I don't want to abandon. What is the balance here. He said he will not talk about it.

I'm sorry. That's difficult. I don't know what to tell you. I'm a sufferer and I never pull away, so I have no advice for you about that.
But I just wanted to say that your situation sounds very difficult,
