How Do You Resolve Unresolved Trauma?

Some of them are ongoing and others are in the past. They are all linked together though. Child hood emotional abuse contempt ongoing then medical traumas, and a medical interpersonal trauma over the length of 20 years. My mother was linked to the medical traumas and she continues to dish out emotional abuse however I am dealing with this better now. The past ones are medical interpersonal and surgeries where several times I thought I was going to die. All in the same area. I still get pain in body memories. All surgeries were highly charged emotionally.

Are you in therapy or is that an option? I have some medical trauma too. That, connected with probably some of the abuse, has really messed up my body and my connection to my body (eating disorder, addiction, chronic pain, etc). I find body or somatic psychotherapy (like Somatic Experiencing) to be helpful. Not sure what your options are where you are at. But for me resolving this stuff has taken a good amount of time, beginning to notice when I'm responding out of a trauma habit, and learning new ways to respond to feelings (emotions or body sensations or body memories). Slowly gaining control or power through this process of noticing and changing responses, so like "re-wiring" the nervous system activation, especially around triggers....and there are many triggers, I'm finding...so it's slow. If you can work with a therapist who specializes in trauma, that could be very helpful.

Chava said it well. To add my own exerpeince is an elaboration of what she said.
  • Using Mindfulness meditation can help give room for the old traumas to be felt and observed, and Mindfulness real-time practice can help you become aware of when you feel triggered, so you can create a different response (the re-wiring). Inch by inch, you gain more ground, as you can feel what is arising and direct yourself to a new response.
  • Different mind/body practices assist making room for the old traumas to be felt and released; Craniosacral Technique, myofascial release and massages (gentle style), reiki work, therapeutic touch, etc.
  • As Chava said, it can be slow, and very rewarding and freeing; just be gentle, and consistent.

I have gone through an almost exact scenario, but add in domestic violence and financial abuse. I am deeply sorry you're going through this. I empathize. Most days, I wake up shaking through my anxiolytic dose.
