Sufferer I Am A Mess

My son is 17. He is at home now and it is up and down with him. He wants his driving licence so bad, but I am so afraid to let him get them. He has been using drugs as a way of dealing with his feelings. I have caught him with weed, huffing things, snorting pills, and drinking. What he did when he was trying to hurt himself was snorted 12 xanax and 12 adivan. He was not right for two days and don't really remember much either.

I am not sure how I can be helping you by complaining about all my issues. I just went back and read the first line of your post and it said, "I need help." I sure didn't mean to make this all about me, but I am so thankful I did open up to you.

How old are your children? How are they dealing with things now?

17...well my son is too, and is turning 18 in April. My son is in driver's training right now, and all of his friends. Its always of concern...when new young drivers start to drive...but its something they will need to have if they wanna drive...so I was just happy he didnt want to start the training at 16 (he was still a little scared). And to I have caught him with weed, but he hasnt touched anything else (cause he is scared of it, thank God).

I wonder...if, once he recovers a little...if enrolling him in a drivers training would be GOOD for him? It might give him something to look forward to...something to strive for....improve his motivation...maybe improve his self-esteem by giving him something to be proud of, etc etc Obviously he would be on a really short leash when he drives, but so will my son, lol.

I may sound like a really shitty parent for this...but here is the truth of my son and weed. K..at 15, I caught him stoned, came in late, didnt give a shit about school, gave me grief all the way around, at every turn, and I told him to stop smoking weed, that he was to young. Once he was older it would be his choice. By 16, he was buying it off some creature downtown (gulp), and smoking in parks with strangers (gulp), going to parties and lying about where he was going and then coming home wasted (gulp). This freaked me right out...scared the shit outta me! Smoking weed is one thing...but buying who knows what offa who know who, gettin wasted and staggering home....was terrifying to me. So we had a major heart to heart a year ago. I expressed my worries and he expressed his thoughts. I told him that if he didnt buy weed, didnt smoke it out in the bushes, and get wasted like he was doing...he could smoke it at home....under these conditions. He must put a real effort into school, not smoke before or during school, not smoke before work. He is allowed to smoke it outside. The result is: his grades went way up almost immediately (Grade 12 honour roll now, and going to college next year), and he works 20 hours a week at the same job for 2 years and loves it, plays hockey 12 months of the year, and never goes out to 'party' anymore. He is safe. When he smokes he is safe, cause he is here. I supply the weed through someone i know, so I know what he is getting, and he doesnt have to carry cash and do a deal somewhere scary. I know how much he is smoking, and it isnt very much. Its mostly after a full day of allll good things, that he will smoke some and then go watch the hockey game on tv and just chill.

That was a really hard one for me. I didnt want to 'allow' it, but felt he was in far worse trouble, if I didnt allow it. I felt it would be better if he did it here, since he was gonna do it anyway, under worse circumstances. This worked out for us. I am in no way suggesting it for you and your son, or anyone else, because it is a risk, and something none of us really wants to do. But my son was heading down the wrong track, and it was shoving a huge wedge between us, and he was rebelling big time. I didnt want him running with a street crowd...

So that explains how my son is doing. My daughter who is 20, is in university in her 2nd year of a 5year teachers programme. She had a couple of really rough years, but she too is solid now. She has PTSD as well, but not as severe as mine, thankfully, she wasnt exposed to as much of the day in-day out craziness. Of course we all have our times and issues still, but she is generally on the healing path. I am very very grateful...

I mentioned in my first post that I soley focussed on the kids and getting/keeping them on the right path, to get through this. It was my ONLY goal. I could not let what happened mean that their lives would go down the toilet because of what happened with their father, and to us. The result is: they are good and I am a mess. But it was worth it, cause the kids are good. And 1 would do it again if i had to. Now though, I am off work and being put on disability...and I dont want that, I want a life back. I want me back.

How does listening to you, help me, you wonder? Cause you need help, and I need help. And we can talk about things, and share, and understand. We can offer advice, or just listen. We can share what we tried, and if it worked or not. We can share a few laughs and pick each other up when we feel shitty. All sorts of things. I think I just sort of described what friendship is. In a nutshell: we can enjoy a friendship. I dont have to worry about being a shitty friend the way I do with people who are well and cant relate, and neither do you. We can be two shitty friends...being friends!!!! That is HILARIOUS! lol

So...did you work today? How was it? I am anxious to here...keeping my candle lit for you today, hoping all goes well...

Oh...one more thing...one more trick that has helped me...no matter how shitty I am feeling/doing...I try to have 'something to look forward to' no matter how small or silly. Sometimes I have to fake that- till i make it too...but it helps overall. You might want to try that, and sorta see if you can get your son thinking of some things he would like to do/see too. We need alllllllll positive things to swing the scale over to our side. We have had way to many negatives...we need as many good things as we can think of, and as much of them as possible....

LittleHugger,

I finally got to a computer, thank God. I was having a down day yesterday. I didn't feel like texting on my phone all night. I am sorry I am just now getting back to you. I decided to take a night to do something for me. I got on my treadmill and walked three miles last night. It has helped alot because today my mood is much better. I know that I need to do this everyday and I am going to. I am 250 lbs. That holds me back alot.

Now, I don't want you to think that I think you are a bad parent. I don't at all. I do understand why you did all you have done for your children. I am just so glad it has helped your son. I know the laws are different down here than up there though. In the US weed is illegal. I dont agree at all with that. I wish they would just legalize it, tax it, and solve our countrys debt problems. Drinking is much more dangerious. It kills more people than weed could ever take credit for.

I hope that the day has shead many blessing on you today. I hope that you got to spend some time on "YOU" today. I realize in some sort of a way, we both have "let ourselves go" because of our children. That is one way that me and you can connect. It is kinda like when we (or I) can start to focus on ourselves, we do not know how or where to start. At least that is how I feel anyway.

I never thought you were a saint. I know that no one is, even preachers that stand on Sunday to tell others how to live their life. You are a good person, I do know that. You have spent alot of time talking to me about your life and you did not have to. I want so much for you to feel better too.

Today was a good day. I went to my son's school and they talked to both of us about sending him to a school where they have therapy half a day and school the other half. He agreed to it. They told me to watch him when he comes home today. They think he is really mad about it and he may slip back into depression. He does not want to leave his school, but in the long run it will be the best for him.

I have not went back to work yet. I was planning on going back this thursday. I am not sure I will if he starts acting weird when he gets home today. Seems like when I have a good day, he has a way of making it bad with an attitude, being weird, or other things that put me on guard or crisis mode.

I hope that my grammer and spelling does not get me tagged again by these people on here. "Laughing my ass off" is not allowed on here so I will spell it out just to be a smart ass while I have acess to a computer. I am going to run the spell check and grammer check too. ;)

Much love to you and yours. I will write more later. It is about time for the kids to get home from school.

What a great thread.

Little hugger- Big hugs to you. Good for you for being real, honest, and for watching out for your kids! Smart thing, realizing that kids are going to do what they want.

Hugs to you too Want2cope.

Both of you have a lot going on. I am listening, but just wanted to give you a big hug as I listen. Ok, going back to my quiet corner now...

Sorry to hear yesterday was a tough one, but I am thrilled that you overcame it and did something really good for you! And so happy that you felt better. I hope you're proud of yourself for that, cause it isn't easy to get going when you feel lousy! Keep it up!!! And do it all for you!!!!:)

Your hope of a blessing for me today was delivered...because it looks like I have a therapist who has loads of PTSD experience and early childhood trauma!! I haven't had any therapy for myself, and I need it pretty bad. There are just too many triggers in every day life now, and I can't run or hide all damn day everyday anymore. I have been running and hiding and trying to forget for as long as I can remember. So my prayers have finally been answered...and I have more HOPE for finding some sort of peace inside myself and in trying to walk with the other people on this planet, instead of being afraid of them. So...thank you for the prayers!!!

It sounds like you had a hugely positive day with your son's situation. I'm sure it was more than a little stressful though, and may continue to be for a while, especially while getting him settled in this school. Transitions like this can be difficult...and he will need to be watched for changes for sure. I am sure you are all over that though. I know you will take care of him and do all you can do, just make sure you are refilling your personal gas tank with some self-care so that you can keep supporting him. I think you may be stuck in semi-crisis mode until he is settled. Because of this going back to work and staying at work for you will be determined on a day by day basis.

:roflmao: at your being tagged for spelling too!!!! I downloaded a spell check so I could try to improve my "readability". And I quoted a whole quote unnecessarily, and got served for that, twice. Now I don't use that REPLY function. I really don't wanna get kicked out of here. Maybe we could try to make a time for the chat room (they are grammatically incorrect in there and nobody seems to mind...those naughty devil's...they go in there to spell incorrectly :sneaky:. )

Have you had a candle burning? I have. It works for me to try to leave my WORRY/STRESS with the candle, and that way I can just get to business. Ya figure if we set the barbecue on fire it would work even better?
Hugs,
LH

Hey simplekindofgirl, thanks for the hugs!!! And your thoughts!!!

And please, feel free to come out of your quiet corner anytime, and join in...

LittleHugger

I finally got to a computer again. I text you alot on my phone and when I tried to send it, it would not go through. You talk about mad. So, Now it is the next day after that. I am not sure if I even remember what I had said to you.

I just went back and read what you last wrote. I know one thing I did say is that I am so happy for you. Look at you. Your on your way to recovery. I am very proud of you. I just wish that we lived closer so I could be one the first people you go out with. I believe once you work through some things you are going to be a different person. My candle is burning for you also.

I was supposed to go back to work yesterday, which was last night. I went to the dr and got my excuse. Yesterday my son was in a bad mood, sulking over him not having a car or his licence. He pitched a baby fit over it. I tried to talk to him. I was standing in his door way. He started screaming at me to go on. I said no, I am trying to talk to you. Then he got up, ran through me, to get out of his room. He pushed my shoulder as he did that, and it is sore today. Now my boyfriend is mad cause he did that. I just could not make myself go back in to that place last night.

I am going to write more later, just wanted to drop you a line or two. I hope today brings you many blessings. Much Love

simplekindofgirl, Much love to you also. Please feel free to join in with us.
You don't have to stay in a corner, "Nobody puts babe in the corner." A quote from dirty dancing.

Want2cope,

I'm sorry that your son is so lost and angry right now. Does he gets that your trying to help? Sounds like he has a lot of anger, and is very hard to connect with. This must be very discouraging when you are trying to help him, and stay sane yourself. I remember all too well, the frustration, especially when you can clearly see they are on a path of destruction, and you are trying to hold on to them, so things don't get any worse, and your trying to get them the help they need.

How long was your doctor's note good for? It sounds like both you and your son, aren't ready for you to go to work yet. Things are still pretty unstable. When are you supposed to go back to work now??

I hope your boyfriend is supportive of you and your son working things out. You and your son need a ton of support now. When my son was giving me a hard time, my boyfriend at the time (who has never had children) felt I should 'tough love' the kid, and throw him out. He then started giving my son the cold shoulder, and passive/aggressively expressing his general disapproval even when the kid was just hangin around the house. I told him that he would be the first to go, and not my son, if he didn't stop adding to the crap my son was already going through. As far as I was concerned, my son did not need tough love after his father committed suicide. The kid was hurting and couldn't talk about his pain, nor could he just make it go away. It was gonna take time, love, and whatever else he needed, but definitely not tossing him out at 15 and 16.

I hope you have the rest of the week off...

How is that shoulder today? Have you had the energy to do your walking?

Should we bring this conversation private maybe? Isn't that what the conversation function is for? Are we breaking rules somehow? Like not staying on the thread topic or something...?

Hang tough hun!
Hugs,
LH

Oh my, you just described exactly how I feel about my son and getting to hold on to him. I can not believe how you get me and him and don't even know us. Yes, you get my sons anger. He is so angry and don't know how to deal with it. He doesn't want ti deal with it is what he tells me.

How are things going with you? Hows therapy? You seem to be so happy and with it.

I hope are not breaking the law on here. Laughing my ass off.

How strong you are to stand up to your boyfriend. I am so proud of you. My boyfriend is mostly supportive. He just is not cool with my son hurting me and my shoulder. My shoulder still hurts in the bone.

I have been walking. It helps. I walked and jogged one mile two different times yesterday and I walked this morning. I am going to walk before work tonight.

I am going to cut it short because I have to take my son to therapy in just a few. Much love.

@LittleHugger

I so related to your story of your son and his weed smoking and how you broke down and let him smoke at home rather than buy from unsafe sources. I have now been where you are and have made the same decission. I have pretty much picked the lesser of two evils. I don't think you are a shitty parent. In fact you are an awesome parent because you are taking a huge risk for your son. I relate though to the idea of feeling like a shitty parent. What is it about marijuana that some people just have to have it.

My son scares the sh*t out of me when I drive. His comments on how I should "just go" even though the light is red or cars are coming do not comfort me. He is ADD and so impulsive. It is going to be very scary day when he gets his liscence. We have continous conversations on the consequences of getting too many tickets and of course there is permanent damage or death. I think sometimes it's really hard to watch. Maybe we have to just close our eyes and plug our ears like in the middle of a horror movie.
