DBT was initially pretty much exclusively used for people with BPD. I think that as it becomes more widely used for a much broader range of mental illness, the formats that it is delivered in will inevitably become more flexible.
I'm sorry that you were put in the position where you were required to justify note-taking, because that seems pretty unnecessary and even counter-productive.
Certainly even without the traditonal delivery format, DBT has a lot to offer with the skills that it teaches so if you're finding the vids more helpful, then stick with it:)
