You did absolutely right in cutting him off. Sounds as if you both my have PTSD of different degrees. If you have to fear his rage or put up with "poor me" crap, you may have serious PTSD just from his continuing manipulation. It is healthy for you to call his bluff. Bullies are cowards, and they get angry (and sometimes dangerous) when they are exposed. So if that's what's happening, distance is best for you and your kids.
It took me 11 years to get the guts to totally split from such a toxic relationship. I already had lifelong PTSD when I met her. Now I'm successfully dealing with the further damage from knowing her. Admire yourself for your courage. Things will get better.
