I Hate Fireworks!

I hate them, too!!!!! The apartment fire (in which I almost died and which began my lovely relationship with PTSD 16 yrs ago) was started by kids playing with fireworks and happened right around July 4th. I used to love fireworks.

Folks in my neighborhood have been setting them off for the last 3 weekends. Thank goodness the 4th is coming soon and hopefully these will stop. My anxiety spikes through the roof.

It is good to know I'm not the only one.

I live in a very small town out in the middle of a national forest (The Nantahala, North Carolina, USA). Needless to say, fireworks around here have to be handled with extreme caution!

Our town puts on a 5 minute show at 9PM on the 4th, and other folks blow off a few firecrackers, etc. here and there in town, but for the most part it has been quiet this week (THANK GOD!).

Furthermore, my PTSD Service Dog HATES fireworks, and is terrified of them. So! I don't go to the celebration, because I am NOT going anywhere without her! And she comes first, when it comes to something like this.

She and I will celebrate with our windows closed, because they blow them off about a half mile from here, sigh...

I live in central Ca. There are a lot of Mexican nationals, and Hispanic people in the community who are VERY fond of illegal fireworks that either they or family bring up from south of the border or buy at one of the local Indian reservations. (I'm not being racist, all of the families that use these fireworks in my neighborhood are Mexican or Hispanic). I'm talking the large commercial grade fireworks you see at ball parks and city fireworks shows. The kind you have to launch out of a metal tube. I have one neighbor two houses down that has already started lighting of a few a night. I have about 4 or 5 other neighbors in the neighborhood that do the same thing. This will go on for about a week after the 4th, as it has for as long as I've had these neighbors. They also light these same type fireworks throughout the year at various holidays, birthdays, weekends.

When they go off they scare the hell out of me, at least the first few, after that I'm hyper vigilant and keep a close eye on my security camera monitor. Once I see the flash, I know the boom is coming. It doesn't always work, sometimes it still startles me.

They are very illegal, and I could call the police. I won't though. I don't want to ruin others fun because of my condition. Also I think the "Safe & Sane" fireworks laws of Ca (and most states) are too extreme. If someone wants to blow off their hands out of stupidity, I say let them, they won't do it a second time.

Of all the holidays, the 4th is my least favorite simply because of the fireworks.

They've been at it for HOURS now- on a darn Tuesday! It began in early evening, while it was still light out. It's tapering off now but there were fireworks going off in every direction. Lots of em. Big ones. Not quite the 'public show' huge ones, but pretty close.

@Barberian may be onto something. It's not a racial thing- it's an immigrant thing. Most of my neighbors came to the US from Middle Eastern countries. They're thrilled to be Americans, so they celebrate it a lot. I just wish their joy didn't make me flinch.

I normally hate the fourth of July. But I love fireworks. I will be safe at my daughters house barbequing. I will love being surrounded by family.

I am so sad that fireworks upset so many people. I do not like it when they shoot off guns. It is really scary.

@ Barbarian, love your post! I am not prejudiced either. We have a population of 40,000 illegals. They have no respect.

:roflmao: So correct they won't do it again, but they will get fixed for free!

People are still blowing them off here! Outright rude JMHO, I need my sleep.

They make me flinch from time to time but I'm fairly good with them.

The other day one of my neighbors set off one that was so loud I thought something came through the wall of my home! Needless to say, our dog who is afraid of thunder and those type of noises was scared beyond control. This is the first time in my fourteen years living here that that happened. Judging by the size of the booms, I'm not sure they were legal, but I didn't call the police either. I live in a rural area where a group of houses are close together.

I'm glad it's over.
