I do ocassionally get a bit of a "passenger rather than the driver" sort of experience with DID sometimes. A couple of my parts that are now pretty well integrated tend to stick their nose in and take over briefly without me really losing consciousness entirely. For me, that never lasts long, but in people that get that partial co-consciousness thing a lot, I can see how that description might slot in. Certainly my parts have their own set of emotions that I can't control (yet).
With parts that aren't integrated, I'm not conscious of them taking over; and have no awareness of (or memory of) what happens while they're in charge. I think that's mostly what people experience with DID, especially before therapy and co-consciousness and internal dialogue starts.
I also think that like all dissociative experiences, it's going to vary from person to person...if that helps at all?
Coming at that statement from the perspective of Structural Dissociation? I have no idea - I never could get my head around that theory!!
