JFF - Shall I dye my hair black?

<sneaky grin> Okay! I know this is total nonsense, but I’d like to have some fun with it.

I’ve been sick for the past year & a half. And have had to cut my hair quite short in order to manage it. (Curls. OMFG. Curly hair is just work or dreadlocks/matting, no getting around it).

- I’m naturally dark blonde / brunette.
- But I was born with black hair, just like my dad’s (black Irish) and it fell out and grew in blonde, and is darker in cold climates / lighter in sunny ones,
- I’m not pretty. Never have been. Almost never minded.

In my early 20’s I was every color of the 🌈 rainbow 🌈 … literally… but I’m in my 40’s now. And going with wild colours at a certain age? Just makes one look older than they actually are. Trying too hard. Desperate. Nope. Not going there until I’m ACTUALLY old-old. And then that will be fun 😎 If I make it another 20. In the meantime?

So I’ve stayed in my natural range for the past 20 years.

But as I’ve been sick? I cannot afford to HAVE my hair done. ($200-$400) And am winging it on my own ($10). And have found? “Brown” is not a $10 box color. Amazing results in salons, and a shitshow at home. A couple dozen “browns” have turned my hair (almost but not quite) black (horrific), purple, red, weirdly blonde, and…shudder. They’re just… bad. And my skin tone? HATES them. (Especially the purple-brown which made ME look yellow. Doctors were concerned. You know you have BAD hair, when? Yeah. Blood tests are ordered. FFS).

My fallback position on this who hair thing, has been… f*ck it. If I can’t find a brown I can live with? I’ll just dye it black. Go goth.

The thing about black hair dye? If. Does. Not. Fade. It is a THICK molecule, and you pretty much have to shave your head, to start over.

My family is BEGGING me not to dye my hair black, because they’ve seen the horrible dark brown results. (Including the doctor is concerned because I look yellow purple brown).

Coin in the air, my peeps.

I’ve had a year and a half of bad hair.

- f*ck it? Raven black?
- Patience. This, too, shall pass?

I love black hair. have done black a few times. This is the one I use though… Blue Charcoal ironically I used because of the bad reviews of “I only see blue in the sunlight otherwise it is jet black”. This one, at least for me has some shading. I have used and really like the Ruby. The Blue Mercury one of my daughters did as highlights to her hair and looked amazing, but is is BLUE 😂 like… very and she is a brunette

However, I am biased… GO REDHEAD! 😁

How about trying a semi permanent black, like Artic fox, crazy colour or dimensions? They all typically last 12-28 washes depending on the brand/your starting colour, and super easy to do yourself at home.
I say do whatever makes you feel more you, more happy in your own skin. life is too short to nit do what you what x

Hard no, I did it once and it took *forever* to get the shitting stuff out. Tried everything. Literally had to grow it out, looked awful.

Best tip - find a college with students in training. They are alwaaaays looking for people to practice on.

IMO go ash blonde if you are cool toned, and copper balayage if warm toned 😊

Going to a college for hair and beauty is a great idea!

So I always had the super bright colors too - then ...well.old. LOL
So my hair gal started weaving in colors (think blue and purple) like highlights but she kept them light. So now I get "oh wow - I didn't realize you had all those colors in your hair" all the time.

Go black and then keep the colors - just make them a bit more subtle!

Women are lucky - they can do that and still look good. So if you want to - do it....

I have however NEVER seen a man that dying their hair black was a good look for. Somehow it just looks like an old guy trying to look young - which makes them look older..... I was joking about dying my hair with the girl who cuts my hair, and she kindly pointed out a guy spending a small fortune to get his hair to look like mine (salt and pepper turning brown on top).
