Medications For Ptsd ?

Remember that all treatments, be they drugs or a type of therapy, have a benefit/risk ratio. Depression is a serious disease that impacts every part of life. None of them helped my depression which just made me more anxious because I was so depressed and I wanted relief. If the benefit you get is a heightened mood, then would you be willing to take the risk that it won't help? Can you imagine that your time at therapy could be used to learn new skills rather than focusing on how tired and lethargic you are? Many people just need a short cycle of them, others feel better taking them daily. It's very individual. You're experience won't be like mine or anyone else. Try not to be afraid.

I don't know why it says my post is anonymous I must've hit the button by mistake. It's from me, KwanYingirl wishing you well.

I like to have a short acting immediately available safety net on hand to stomp on downward cycles before they kick off (read: Valium). I do not have this at present.

I'm also living in a downward cycle at present, so I probably wouldn't be able to take it anyway. Shrug. It's one of those things that catches me before I fall, not hauls me back up after I've fallen.

What helps on a daily basis are adrenaline fueled activities, exercise, & low level stimulants.

...Also, pain management. When my pain is badly managed, my PTSD stuff uses it as a springboard.

You've never heard of Valium? That is unusual.

I am not sure I understand why you started this thread. The title sounded as though you were looking for input on medications to take to control some of your PTSD symptoms.

Then you said you dont want to take what your doctor prescribed as you are scared to take anything. I think it is very important for you to share this with your doctor and ask for a schedule to manage the fear of going onto a medication.

Your doctor may start you with a very small dose.

From reading further, I feel it is important you share more of your fears with your doctor. It's a bit dangerous to rely on the forum if you are not sharing all of your thoughts with your doctor.

May I ask, are you very young?

I dont like taking any medication i haven't token before because i don't know if its going to make me better or worse

You'd find that out, and maybe find something that helps. I understand the reluctance to take medication, however you won't learn of or experience the benefits if you don't try. True, you also may avoid the down sides, but there's a chance things won't get worse that may be worth a shot.

i choose other treatment options for my ptsd symptoms rather than taking medication but its something i am considering now its something ive been so uncomfortable with for so long ...

Flossy FYI its not usual for someone that didnt consider medication an option i made the decision to try other treatment options besides medication when i was diagnosed and for someone that didnt use medication its not usual for someone like my self not to know the medications , and medication names that are used to treat PTSD symptoms how would i know when i never consider medication an option ,, and used other treatment options ?

Ohh, makes sense Hope.

Not saying you 'have' to take meds, or anyone has to, just that addressing fears and uncomfort about the topic, and considering it as a possible aid, may be helpful to your healing. Hope things go well for you, however you decide to heal.

@Hope123321 It would have been more helpful for others to help you, if the title of the thread was different. It might have been clearer if it was named something that addressed your fear and reluctance to trial medication.

The title that is there and the first post made it very easy for a reader to assume that you were more than ready to embark on medications and were seriously researching them to do so.

The inclusion of "FYI" was not necessary.

We all get easily upset, we are all sensitive. We also all learn from this forum how to communicate more precisely and clearly in life. This is a hard thing to learn, but it helps us all to mature, no matter what our age. The forum has helped me with this and I will learn more all the time and apply it to the rest of my life.

I do hope you have got some information from this thread to help you with your decision and I encourage you to tell your doctor that you are very afraid of trialling medication.

I find it helps me when trialling something to keep notes on how I feel and any symptoms I have. I then have this record to talk to my doc if I want to, as I can't rely on memory. The record-keeping helps me feel in control.
