I know mirtazapine can cause sedation, and induce sleep... I’m just not sure if it helps with hyper vigilance. (It’s been awhile since I’ve taken it.)

What side effects are you worried about?

Mainly thr suicidal thoughts thing. Its says in there it may increase this? I have my partner watching me like a hawk when I feel like that to make sure I'm ok but if this was to increase its just not safe. I know theres a big chance it wont do that, but I thought Id check with real people first!

Thanks eve! Xx

You won’t know what your side effects will be -if any- until you take it.

There’s no way to test for what our individual neurochemsitry is, so taking any kind of mood/mind altering substance is very much an experiment of trial and error. Pick any drug on the planet and about 80% of people will respond 1 way, and 20% will respond in wildly different ways. (Which is why on the list of side effects, it almost always includes the exact opposite of what the drug is “supposed” to do). A classic example is Stimulants. Generally speaking... For most people? They’re stimulating. (Hence the name). For people with ADHD they’re soothing and calming. But even people with ADHD react very differently to different types of stimulants. Another classic example is booze. Some people are silly drunks, angry drunks, wild and out of control drunks, barely affected by it drunks, etc.. And even though the alcohol is the same chemical in every kind of booze? People tend to react differently to wine, beer, gin, tequila, whisky, etc.

So whenever you start a new med? Pay attention to what happens to YOU.

One of those, it doesn’t really matter if it’s he best drug in the world with no side effects for some, the worst with side effects up to their eyeballs for others... what matters is how it affects you.

I think most antidepressants have the increase in suicidal thinking as a possible side effect. I wouldn’t worry about it until it happens to you.....I have been on many antidepressants but only had that side effect once.

I've been on Mirtazipine 45mg at night for months+

I never found it helped -much- for inducing sleep on its own, as I'm also on Quetiapine 200mg and Phenergan 50mg for insomnia.
But I did find it helped more after starting Venlafaxine during the day.

I haven't noticed any benefit for hypervigilance either.

I also didn't experience any worsening of mood from starting the medication - it's probably the only anti-depressant I've tried where I had no noticeable side effects.

Good luck, I hope it works for you
