Do you have bulk pick up where you live?

I needed a rug and drove around til I found a rug by side of the road. I unrolled it, was in pretty decent condition... Just a few stains that came out with resolve and I borrowed my moms vacuum to clean it as best I could.

Its not ideal but it solved my problem til I was able to buy a rug.

Just a thought. You'd be surprised what people throw out. With a fresh coat of paint...you'd never be able to tell it was someone's trash.

FREE is GOOD

Also for food have you checked churches or food pantries that give out food. Some do once a month...some do more. You can google it in your area.

Also have you signed up for WIC for the baby?

I hope some of this helps.

Also...its tag sale season. You can find tons of furniture and baby stuff.

Thanks @Heather There is bulk pick up around here. So far I've seen only broken furniture, but I will go out before the next trash day to see what I can find. You're right, free is definitely good. I'm not even as worried about the food as I am about everything else -- I've starved before, I can do it again. But yes, I am on WIC and SNAP. The baby is totally fine for food, and he will continue to be. If I have to keep living off of small portions of rice, I will.

@lostforgottensoul Just realized I didn't answer your question about my job and Ukraine. Basically, when they hired me, they were looking for someone based in Eastern Europe -- I don't really know why. But they said they hired me BECAUSE I was based there and a specialist in Russia. So, if I'm now in the States, I may have lost my value as a Russia/Ukraine expert. My work doesn't focus on Ukraine or Russia at all (I write general news briefs about U.S. and world news, but nothing specifically focused on Eastern Europe), but I think they were hoping that after I got used to motherhood I'd start doing more actual reporting on Ukraine and Russia.

Baking soda is less expensive than boric acid .... and works and isn't toxic as the other. I know because in their infinite wisdom, military barracks were build on a landfill and it was a continual problem. Basically if you pour a bit around rooms, in cupboards and door ways and such... it gets on their legs. Roaches being kinda clean for the insect world ingest it off their legs and it gives them gas. Roaches can't pass gas so bye bye roach... but last thing they do is lay eggs... so it's a cycle for a while til you get some income coming in.

Very sad about those conditions for that appointment Casey. Nails on the floor, mice and a roach infestation? Sheesh.

I think there must be a Dollar Tree somewhere near here. But I don't even have a dollar to my name! Though hopefully I will soon, so I will check out the store then.

Letgo is another site that people sell stuff on. It's similar to Craig's list for selling stuff. Sometimes you can catch a good deal. Don't forget Craig's list has a free list and freecycle too.

It's like you wrote my thoughts...sans the kid part. I broke up with my partner and had to move suddenly. And while I was initially excited about living on my own, it's been one financial thing after another since I moved and that comes of course with a lot of worry. And a lot of fears, about my safety, and ability to take care of myself, financially and mentally...And unexpected things that I needed to get and didn't think I'd need and so on...(like toilet seat breaking and me having to get new one and tools and replace it). At first I kept saying to myself to just take it a step at a time and it will be fine, but then I got month with less work, while more expenses, so I've started making financial plans, and frugal ideas, and trying to borrow stuff, or do without or....
So yeah, moving on your own isn't always ideal even when it has it's perks. Or moving to new place. There is adjustment period...You can do this! I would make a list of free things you can do around(library, walks, free events) to keep you distracted while things settle a bit. Also, things on the internet or on your computer, music that makes you feel better and so on. You can get through this better if you keep your spirits up. I like all the other suggestions.
Just for the nails on the floor, I agree, that sounds awful...do you have any neighbors, that could may be have a toolbox? You really only need one tool to try to remove nails, so may be you can borrow it from someone and remove the nails. One good thing about living on your own in the long run, is getting very handy with things and creative in solving problems. Though it's totally exhausting while you're going through it, of course...
