There's a book you may be interested in called A Language Older than Words by Derek Jensen. It's largely about communicating with animals and people w/o the need of language.

We're the only species that uses words; all other species seem able to get by without them. And way back in our evolutionary past, we didn't need them either. It's still there, we just have ourselves convinced that words are the only way we communicate.
