I'm still NERVOUS that the bullying will return, to tell you the truth. Bullies never really change. They just kind of stay out of the way for awhile, until they think your guard is down, then they attack again. And that reprieve is only because they have been reprimanded, not out of any sense of propriety or feeling any shame for their actions and words. If they know there can be dire consequences, they will "behave" but that by no means, means that they won't give you a "look" or some other kind of something to upset you! After a lifetime of being bullied, I think I can know this much with pretty good acumen. I think that is the right word anyway. So, I am still kind of NERVOUS at a 9 or so where 9 is bad to do with all this.

I'm thinking of getting something to put scents into my environment. I have to walk or get a ride to a store not too far from here in order to do this. I HATE asking for rides... but carrying something heavy home is really not an option, and I think this thing would weigh something heavier than I should be carrying for a mile or so. I don't know for sure though. A nice walk might do me some good!

A friend bought me some Lavender essential oil, so I thought maybe I can just boil some of it in a pot, rather than buy some fancy thing to "cook" it with. I am trying this method for now, just using a pot on my stove, to see if I like how it makes me feel and how it smells. So I am in a CURIOUS mood, I guess, at a kind of level of 5.

Well, I don't really like the smell of Lavender. Like, not at all! I think it even gave me a slight headache. So that is the end of that. Maybe some other scent might be nice, but Lavender isn't it! That is for sure.

I have not written in a day or two. My moods have been in the upper bands, manic-like sometimes even. I woke up way too early this night. I have been sleeping well for a long time now, so I am DISAPPOINTED at a kind of middle level about waking up so early. However, I do know that my grandmother, in her old age, only slept about 6 hours per night, if that? I have also heard from friends at the Senior Center that when we get older we sleep less hours. I do rest in the afternoons, not sleep, just rest. I don't feel sleepy then, but my back especially needs to lay down for a bit in the afternoons so as to unstress. Otherwise, the nerves start to feel kind of pinched.

Anyway, I am feeling GLAD somewhat too, as there are things in my life that are working out. I have discovered, with help from a member here, how to make a healthy Sports Drink from a YouTube video, so I am really pleased about that, as I have to drink those every day, Dr.'s orders. And the commercial ones are full of chemicals, which my old body does not need! So I am feeling RELIEF about this matter anyway, at a 3 maybe, just a little relief, because really, I would much rather drink WATER!

I got a little bit cocky today and told a friend of mine that one of my bullies is a grouch! He was there, listening in, of course, but said nothing. Don't know if I should have done that, but I did. He has been giving me "The Silent Treatment" for several months now, since I said to my friend, "I'm not in the mood to be teased today." Well! You would think I had said something a lot worse than that to get treated this way, but who knows, everyone has their buttons, I guess. (He had been teasing me before I said this, and then she teased me too). I hate the silent treatment and I hate being bullied even more, of course, but I guess I am stuck with things the way they are. Still, at least he is no longer bullying me, so that is good.

This was not a good day for me, because I got mad at myself for doing the above and chided myself all morning for it. You know, I kind of felt like I had stooped to his level or something. I am not a bully usually. Once in awhile, however, I have my bullyish type moments. I guess this was one of them. We all have our "days" I guess....

I just got my new book entitled: OVERCOMING TRAUMA AND PTSD (A Workbook Integrating Skills from ACT, DBT and CBT by Sheela Raja PhD). In the book she mentions that children may have had invalidating experiences when they were kids, like if a child says she is hungry and her mother says, "No you are not." and this goes on a number of times, it can be damaging to one's ability to trust one's own feelings and make it difficult to make decisions in later life (or words to that affect).

So I remembered many times being told the opposite when I was a kid, like 100s of times! I was told that I had to finish all the food on my plate, that I was "underweight" and I was forced to sit at the table until I did finish that food! And if I did not finish it, it was given to me at my next meal, COLD, and I was forced to finish it THEN. YUCK! YUCK!! YUCK!!! I can still remember it now, it was so awful!!!!!!!

So now I have a weight problem. I am a bit overweight. I also am on a medicine that causes weight gain. I have been far more overweight previously, before I started to watch my weight. At one point, I went from 135, which I had weighed all my adult life, up to 195 in four months time!!! This was when I was first prescribed a weight altering medication. They took me off that one, but still I am on one now that causes weight gain, so I am kind of in this double whammy kind of situation with this, ya know?

Anyway, I am ANGRY now at being made to finish the food on my plate when I was a kid! VERY ANGRY, like a 10 ANGRY. Because this has contributed to my adult weight problems for sure, but also because it has affected my ability to make sound decisions in my adult life, I am sure.

My choices in men, for instance, were not healthy ones for the most part. I either chose men who abused me or neglected me. My decision making ability as a child was damaged by this attitude by my parents that I was too thin, and I am sure as well that the Dr. told them this as well. Well! I was an active kid. I liked to run around and play and climb trees and ride my bike, etc. So I burned calories quickly. So what! I didn't feel tired or weak or anything. Also, I was tall for my age. So of course I was going to be slender. What crime was there in that? I mean, really!?! NONE, as far as I can see right now. They should have left me alone! I wasn't sick or anything. I was just fine as I was, *I* was happy with ME.

Today I am in a PEACEFUL mood. I'd say at a 7 where 10 is best. I did the laundry, cleaned the Guinea Pig's cage and now I will work in my Workbook on PTSD. All is well in my world this morning. And, as usual, one of my threads made it into the Week's Most Popular Threads here. I do this EVERY week, for as far back as I can recall, my threads are POPULAR! I am so pleased that you all like to answer my threads and comment and so on....

Sheila, do you think that you may be unnecessarily antagonizing passive aggressively your bully? Personally I'd be steering clear of you as well and not giving you attention so as not to further escalate the situation. I think the guy was wise to stay silent considering the circumstances when you say, "I got a little bit cocky today and told a friend of mine that one of my bullies is a grouch! He was there, listening in, of course, but said nothing. Don't know if I should have done that, but I did. He has been giving me "The Silent Treatment" for several months now, since I said to my friend, "I'm not in the mood to be teased today."

Yup, I know I didn't do the right thing that day. Like I said, I got "cocky." I stepped overboard. I didn't have my "filter" on and the words just slipped out of my mouth before I could think about what I was going to say. I realized that very soon after I said it. However, I don't regret having said it. There is no gain in regret, only heartache. I learned a lesson. Do my devotions every morning without fail, no matter how tired I am. If I had done them that morning, as I usually do, this probably would not have happened.

However, there is no real reason for this person to have done all the things that has done to me over the 6 months or so, since he moved here into my building. At first it was teasing. Never when I was alone with him, only when he and I were on the bus or at the Senior Center, around other people. As time went on, the teasing got nastier and nastier. I would try to deflect it with some kind of jovial comment in return, or finally by just ignoring it. None the less, it continued and escalated. I asked for advice here and got plenty of it. But nothing worked, the teasing and bullying continued.

Finally, one day I simply said, "I am not in the mood to be teased today." This I said to another person, not even him. However, he had been teasing me only minutes before she had teased me too, and I had had enough!

Well, the Senior Center Director gave us all a lecture about how a person had the right to attend the Center or ride its bus WITHOUT BEING TEASED OR PICKED ON. She also said that folks could be banned for doing the above.

Well! I had said nothing to anyone in authority, this was all from the bus driver who had overheard me to her, so really, no one could blame me for having the "right" to bully others taken away from them. However, the bully did not see it that way. He told me the next morning that he would no longer be speaking to me, "... because of what you said on the bus." And since then he has been giving me "The Silent Treatment." I read up on this "Silent Treatment" and found out that it is actually another tactic that bullies use to try to control their victims. I read a lot of articles on it, so I forget which one this info was in, but if you Google "Silent Treatment" you might find similar info, maybe even from another source.

Now it has been said that this bully might be trying to protect himself, because he knows that if he opens his mouth toward me, he might let some teasing or bullying slip out without realizing it until it is too late. (Just like that "Grouch" comment slipped out of my mouth). This could be the case, Yes, it could. Or it could just be that he is mad at me, because what I said resulted in his favorite passtime being taken away from him. Bullies get "high" from bullying others. This has been said by others here and is also some info I got from the book I am reading called BULLYING AMONG OLDER ADULTS. Either way, the result is that I have to wait for the bus every morning with this man, and it is uncomfortable. And no, there is no other place to wait for the bus, so I have to sit next to him and listen to the rather "pregnant" silence, because I know that he "hates" me, I have been told this by another person that lives in our building who he has said this to.

I know that two wrongs don't make a right. Even though his bullying of me far outweighs my one comment I made to someone about him, it was not right for me to have said that. I realized it pretty much right after I said it. But, like the tube of toothpaste, I cannot take it back, swallow it and have it not exist. So he knows I think he is a "grouch." I could have called him something far worse.

In fact, another friend of mine, and a co-worker, said to me yesterday, that "No one likes to be teased." I heartily agreed and I said it loud enough so that the bully could hear me agreeing with this man, in fact I repeated his words and went on to say that we have a few folks here at the Center that like to tease others, and that it is not OK.

Furthermore, the Center Director has called in someone from Social Services to give us all a lecture on the 23rd about BULLYING. This might help to solve the problem, because this bully is now bullying a 90 year old very frail man, calling him a "home wrecker" and even going so far as to "warn" the grocery store clerk about him! This has to stop. Someone had to do something. And yes, that someone was and is ME. @The Albatross

PS. Yes, it was me who requested that the Senior Center Director do something about the bullying problem at the Center. I told her about the book on BULLYING AMONG OLDER ADULTS that I am reading and I told her that the book says that this problem is at EPIDEMIC levels in nursing homes, Assisted Living Facilities and Senior Centers. I told her of specific instances where various folks have been bullied, including one lady that came for one day, got bullied, never came back and explained to a friend of mine who goes to her church that she never would return because someone called her a "motor mouth." So, you see, this problem is widespread and needs to be handled all over the country and probably all over the world too! It seems that when folks get to their old age, they revert to childish behaviors, some of them anyway. I've seen it in a number of folks at the Senior Center. We have 2 hardcore bullies at the Center and one who joins in sometimes, but is also their target at times as well. I think in his case, he tries to deflect the bullying from himself, by picking on someone that he knows the other 2 pick on, as a kind of defense mechanism, you know?

It makes me very ANGRY at a 10 that these folks have been getting away with this, that they have turned Seniors away from the Center and that they have bullied dear friends of mine too. In one case, one of the bullies picked on a girl who is mentally challenged and mentally ill. I yelled at him for doing so and told him to "STOP IT!!!" He never again picked on her in my presence again, but on the days I was absent, only God knows if he did or not.

The Workbook mentioned above by Sheela Raja has some interesting exercises in it. In one of them you are to make up an image in your mind that you can go to in times of high stress to lower your anxiety or panic levels. So I wrote out a happy memory, or a combination of many happy memories, that took place at the beach where I used to live. It's a beautiful place and I remembered all my senses there, how the beach sand felt between my toes, how the sunsets were so beautiful there, being with my then best friend and her daughter, walking in the sand along the water's edge and just enjoying the sea air, listening to the waves, picking up a beautiful sea shell, listening to it, but hearing the real ocean too at the same time. This memory makes me HAPPY at a 10 where 10 is best. I will go to it as often as I need to now. I am to read it and memorize it too, so that I can easily go to it when I am in need of it.
