I'm 44 years old now, and have had nightmares of people dying and being murdered since I was a child. It happens at least once a week, often times multiple times a night. This has gone on for decades and I don't know what to do, but I'm tired of it. Any suggestions?

Hi MikeinSeattle,

Do you know why you have that particular nightmare? I'm wondering if you have a reason to have images of murder, or if its more like an OCD fear obsession.

Are you currently in therapy? If not, I recommend seeing a trauma therapist to get at the underlying issue. There are meds you can take to make nightmares less extreme, Prazosin being the most common for nightmares related to PTSD, but you will need to get a prescription. 500mg of Magnesium before bed can help to and is available over the counter.

A trauma therapist once told me that recurring dreams mean there is something you need to deal with. She claimed that everything that we experience is recorded in the brain. Is it possible that you witnessed something when you were very young that scared you really bad? Something you can't remember? She also said that when we are young we can push things back....block them out, but as we get older that becomes harder to do. Maybe this is why some people have what's called a midlife crisis? I hope you can get some relief soon....geez, enough is enough!
