Narcissists Masquerading As Loving Supporters

I am super curious if anyone else wonders how many "loving supporters" on this forum are actually abusers / narcissists looking for "validation", a "supply" to feed on, and/or "ammunition" to use against their "loved" ones supposedly disguised as "help". I know of one narcissist that is here for sure. It makes me wonder just how many of them are on here and how do you tell? Can you tell if someone is actually an abuser on this forum? I suppose their choice of words could be a tell unless they are really good at it.

I'm sure there are some supporters out there that are in that particular relationship because it feeds something unhealthy inside of them. There are assholes everywhere. However, I would say most supporters, especially those who participate in a community such as this, are in that role because they honestly care about their sufferer and want to find ways to deal with the issues that arise in a way that works for both parties.

How can this be possible? Unless you know this individual in real life and have the actual training to diagnose narcissism, then no, you don't.

It amazes me how many people on this forum think they can diagnose narcissism. It seems to be the label slapped on anyone who is...what? Full of themselves and an asshole about it? I'm sure people have had legitimate experience with actual narcissists, but I think it's a shame that it's such a commonly applied label.

Papoc, I wholly agree with you; however, I know this person in real life and have known them for over two decades. Two therapists have diagnosed this person with narcissism. This person has also told me they post here and I've read their posts.

(strongone here) the last reply was mine as well. Thank you osuz and Ogal. I was just curious.

(strongone again) I'm tempted to start a new thread on "don't even try to diagnose anyone"! I've been the recipient myself of someone trying to diagnose me here on someone else's posts. I have a therapist. I don't need anyone else trying to diagnose me, especially without my permission. I wouldn't dream of even attempting to diagnose anyone! I am not a doctor or therapist.

The same way that people can slap 'mentally ill' labels (every heard of someone calling someone else crazy?) without a diagnosis. A narcissist is someone who damages other people to feed themselves. I would rather mistakenly label someone I am with a narcissist than wait for them to suck the life out of me.

I've wondered if family members or whatever come here to watch for what is posted by the person they know. Someone in my family was looking over my shoulder when I was trying to get to a different website on my computer the other day, and the link to this board came up. I've struggled with a lot of fear that she might have tried to track me down here and read what I've posted.

I do understand this. Perhaps we should be calling such people something else that isn't a DSM diagnosis. But I do believe that people don't take offense to those who call themselves empaths (not a DSM term). Perhaps we could call them de-paths. Whatever it is, I understand the thought behind the OP's post, I think.

Someone on line here with self serving intentions regardless of the cost to others.

Dear God, YES!!!

It's like hearing PTSD applied to nonsense; how often people are randomly pathologized & diagnosed. It's ignorant at best, from a population of people whom one would think, would know better.
