Need Computer Help -- Windows Installer Driving Me Nuts!

Thank you, all. :)

I have tried several things before posting here, including checking various forums. However, for people having Windows XP, all I have ever found out was I'd have to reinstall the system.

All suggestions involving a download of any software requiring the Windows Installer to install will not work. Unfortunately, most publish their software to install using the Windows Installer, so that will never work.

I am going to check the forum links above (German) now and will see.

My real problem is: What do I do with the software (e.g. PDF Editor) that I bought online, downloaded and installed years ago, when I need to reinstall Windows XP? All those softwares will get lost -- "of course" I never made any recovery discs, plus, I have not saved the activation codes as some of those softwares are like ten years old. When I reinstall Windows XP, I will not be able to reinstall those softwares. :(

:). I believe you should be able to still do the recovery disk? If you search "create Recovery disk" check in the System Tools folder. I believe it takes about 6 CD's to complete. Better yet would be to have a 8 GB thumb drive.
2. Not sure if this will work as I recall it runs on the Internet and may not require a download. Belarc is a safe free program that runs a scan for your system. You run the scan and print the report. It will list the programs and the COA (certificate of Authenticity).

3. There is a program in XP: Window's Transfer, which can be sent to a CD or thumb drive. It will allow you to back up your programs and the coa of them as well as your preferences. This file must be saved externally ie cd or thumb drive. You will need to do reinstall.

As XP installed the "windows programs" in a seperate drive space they will all be there. None of the programs installed since are placed there. It is very important to do the Windows transfer.

I will get on computer and get some specifics that you can print! I am not sure if XP has the restore to earlier date but this might be an option as well.

??? Are you able to download or is this blocked as well? I will be back :) Hugs Whitney

Gosh, @Whitneys story, you're a gem!

I am able to download, just not to open/install if the software requires the Windows Installer.

I just wish I had money for a new computer :D I used to be real good with computers and other "data processing" in my brain but nowadays I get overwhelmed with five lines of information

Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much for your help! :inlove:

:). My pleasure! I have enough experience to know that as easy as it all sounds, the success requires exact, complete direction.

If anyone knew how many poorly written directions Microsoft has published we would all be with Apple. But most of the programs I work with are windows only!

I may not get too until tomorrow as I have a function today. Try looking into the Belarc and see how it works.

Do you have printing capabilities? It is best to have the printed directions to read and check off as you go :).

Have a great day! Hugs, Whitney

@Whitneys story Whitney, no rush, as in zero. :) I will need time to "digest" all of this information and knowing me that will take two weeks, no kidding. That is, if nothing else happens.

Thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate it.

Oh, and yes, I can print. Agree to what you said about having printed directions. :)

Enjoy your function today, as much as is possible.

Thank you, I had a wonderful time! It was our big charity event for Cancer Survivors of which my friend is :)
We got first prize, which means our table donated the most this year to this amazing organization who helps so many.
:cool::D:hug:

I have found the simplest, first thing to try. According to Microsoft your system should have this in it!

Can you recall about when the problem started as we will need to find a "restore Point date" previous to the problem.

Here are all the directions for System Restore, the nice thing is it may go through the process and then tell you it can't
find the restore files. And it will do nothing to change anything at all! Please read through with patience (it knows my puter is
not XP so ignore the comments about that. I have checked and this is the correct way for yours!

[DLMURL]http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084#appliesto[/DLMURL] near the top of the page is a TRANSLATE to other language:) click on the
little arrow and a box will drop down...Yay! Please don't make your self nervous, wait until you are comfortable with the directions.

I have no idea how the translated pages are but I have done this application many times :)
There are so many people with the problem........ if this works the system will reset before the problem and should be corrected
when running a new windows update.:hug::hug::hug: I am going with hope!!!! Hugs, Whitney

Great to hear you enjoyed the Charity Event! :singing: Your table rules!!!

Thanks sooo much für the instructions! Really very kind, all the trouble to help me. :)
I will do this as soon as possible. Hope e-mail and files etc. won't get deleted. Don't worry, I'll read what it says under the link!

Thanks so, so much!

 This will not remove any files or email. If you installed any programs after the restore point they will not be kept. If you downloaded any programs it might remove the actual exe file.

You might want to bookmark a link in your favorites to take you back to re download. Or check your download folder for the program exe and see if you can save in another folder a copy of it! Then you can reinstall later.

Yes our table did! And do all year.... Hugs, Whitney
