New Here
Hey everyone,

My psychiatrist thinks I have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder because of a bad roommate in college where I witnessed him doing the following:

1. Attempt Suicide twice when he was drunk (once by drinking lighter fluid, the second time was grazing a knife around his throat area.

2. When I told my roommates my stepdad wad Jewish my roommate then antagonized it by blasting Adolf Hitler speeches as I was going to bed

3. I think he may have been into child pornography and tried to show me things online that I turned away from

4. Always jokingly talked about raping women and children and called molesters/sex offenders "champions"

I would've changed roommates but I would have felt in fear for my safety and possibly even my life if I did that so I stuck out going away to school as long as I could. On top of my grandmother needing open-heart surgery at the time and my anxiety i packed up and moved back home. When I got back home for 5 months almost every day I couldn't get the image out of my head of my roommate grazing the knife near his throat. Also, this anxiety has literally debilitated me.. Things I'm excited to do such as go far away to see family or take trips to Philadelphia whether to see my Philies, Flyers, or Eagles play or just to go to the city, driving long distances I am now basically petrified of. I'm always in constant pain everywhere and I feel my grades at school are affected (I had a 3.3 GPA at my old school). I feel friendships are soon to be severed, I can't form relationships with new people. Dating was hard enough since I have Asperger's Syndrome, now it's something I can't even think of doing.

Now I told my family this, my mom and stepdad still think I need to "get over it" but my dad wants to sue my former college roommate for everything he put me through. Now I know I can't sue my old school since I didn't report anything to them because of my fear of doing so and because this was my 2nd year rooming with him (he wasn't bad at all my freshman year which is why me and my roommates decided to stick together for sophomore year). But do you guys think I have a case if I show my proof of seeing psychologists, psychiatrist, the ER, as well as the cardiologist and family doctor (because of making sure I didn't have a heart or kidney problem) to an attorney?? I know it would be a hard case but I think it can be won. Or is it best to not sue him. Most of my friends as well as my mom and stepdad say it's best not to seek legal action, while my dad and a couple other friends really want me to take him to court, what do you guys think?? Thanks a lot in advance for your help!!!

Welcome to the forum Matt.

I'm sorry about the things that happened, they must have been extremely disturbing and nobody should have to be treated that way. However, regarding the legal question, I think that's something you might need to talk to a professional about.

This site has a lot of information and support here so I hope you take time to make yourself familiar with it. Post as much or as little as you are comfortable with. Take care.

Peace,
Rain
