As an ex soldier he should give his gun up until he is medically clear to get it back. If he acted that way even in a combat zone they would take his gun away, and confine him to base. Thats a very good move by him, i hope you have the locks

iluvcats4ever,

I have to say good job, both of you, for how you handled that. Yeah, you probably should have left the moment the gun came out, but part of me is glad you stayed and talked him down. who knows what could've happened if you hadn't. It is very wonderful that you were able to set up a plan together that will hopefully work.

One other thought, may be totally silly for your situation, but consider writing a letter together when he is having a good day and thinking clearly. Something that you could hand to the police if they are ever called (from a safe offsite location). His words explaining how he thinks the situation could be resolved the safest way possible. Maybe like, make sure they announce themselves very clearly and not bang on doors; or turn the sirens off before they get to the house so he doesn't get aggitated.

Best of luck to you

That's potentially a serious issue. Disarming him may actually set him off so be careful. Maybe YOU can hold the keys to the gun safe when he is in a mood?

It sounds like a medication interaction to me.

Is he possibly taking a benzodiazepine (ie. clonazapam) or non-benzodiapine (ie. ambien/stilnox) for sleep? With the stimulating effects of a new SSRI it's possible that he didn't get put to sleep and instead went into a whacky half-asleep state... the finger gun thing and the way he talked about defending himself sounds pretty similar to things I've seen my partner do when he's in this state.

That said, being Australian, we don't have guns in the house (and thank goodness for that). How terrifying for you! I hope you're feeling a little better now. Until this is sorted out the guns need to be stored somewhere else. They just do. And when you're able, definitely talk to his doctors about his behaviour - hopefully they will have some answers :)
