So, after a strange falling out with my therapist involving her views on race & gender, I ended up finding a new therapist. I'm hopeful that I can make some real progress with this one, although I am not at all sure what "progress" actually looks like. Living in Montana, I know it will be difficult to get away from some of the racist ideology that is prevalent in our state, and even the new therapist said things in our first session indicating she may have some racist views against Mexicans and Koreans. But, I really want to make it a point to ignore her views or my perception of her views, and just focus on what I can learn from her about controlling some of the destructive things that I do and some of the overwhelming thoughts that consume me.

I have to admit, I don't really understand racism. Nationalism makes sense to me (for the most part), but racism is bizarre. In a perfect world, you shouldn't have to worry about whether or not your therapist is a racist. In a reasonable world, you shouldn't have to worry about your therapist's personal attitudes, at all, just as you shouldn't have to know what colour underwear they're wearing or what they ate for breakfast.

I don't know your ethnicity, but if you feel that your therapist has a bias against you because of it, how can you trust her? The two of you need to be a team.

I'm multi-ethnic, but I appear white. That typically puts me in an interesting position with racist white people who feel that they can safely express their racism in front of me, not knowing that I am 50% of the race that they are talking about.

That would truly suck. Is it possible to find a person of colour who is a therapist? You need someone you can trust to not be an asshole.
