The only thing the Brady act provides for is requirements for background checks before guns are purchased. It was enacted in 1993. I can't find any record of it being used against vets. who already own fire arms. Are there cases where this was done?

Sorry SD, may hard drive went south or I could give you some info on what is being tried. Here a link that is outside of the VA.......But they are trying to use it......Now if this holds up, then we maybe next....

And yes, it has been used in by the VA a few times. But the vet's got a lawyer and got there rights back (also there firearms)

If the VA finds you unable to handle your own financial affairs then you are assigned a fiduciary for your SC compensation. This will prevent you from owning firearms. In fact, the VA will issue a letter stating so.

Typically this is from the worse cases of mental illness. It really has nothing to do with Obama or the VA. Under 18 USCLink Removedit is unlawful for any person to sell or otherwise dispose of any firearm or ammunition to any person knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that such person “has been adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to any mental institution.”

To when the VA appoints a fiduciary due to your mental illness a judgement has been made. There are also some provisions when purchasing a firearm from a FFL dealer that ask these questions regarding mental competency.

This has nothing to do really with the Brady Bill. It's all about the Gun Control Act of 1968 which prevents anyone for possessing or owning a firearm who has been mentally adjudicated.

Last time I was in the VA booby hatch they asked my wife and I if there were firearms in the house. They didn 't push the issue, as stated above I was not deemed permanently incompetent, but it has most likely become protocol to circumvent suicide or harm to others. This could deter Vets from seeking help for fear they may lose pistol permits if seeking mental health treatment and/or receiving a diagnosis. Something that is being bantered about in New York State and as stated above has Federal precedence.

It has done just that! I was going to do a PTSD 60 day in patient treatment in Denver about 3 years ago.....I did not do it....I did call and talk with top dog and she said that I would not be asked about firearms at all.....But we are dealing with the VA here. I have PTSD, (trust issues) so I DO NOT trust them....I will never trust them.......

One more way a 'road block' has been thrown up to stop healing, closure, and compensation. It is dreadful.

You sort of have to play Devils advocate here. Now I am a huge proponent of the 2nd amendment. But for some mentally I'll or those with PTSD it's a public safeguard.

I don't think its to protect them from themselves, but really other people. Let's face it. I have anger issues. Sometimes I question myself whether I should CCW. What about some kid still in the pressure cooker, having an adverse reaction to meds or self medicating? I'm not sure how often this has ever happened. But can you picture a disastrous outcome?

Now I also do not think any type of control is going to prevent someone from going on a rampage. No law in the world has ever prevented this.

I see it as a natural extension of the litigious society in which we live. Someone will be looking for a payday if the VA drops the ball, so they are protecting themselves. Again, the fear of losing 2nd Amendment rights is enough to keep many Vets from seeking help, and this is my biggest concern.

I do agree with that too. I know I was very apprehensive in my quest for help. I myself luckily don't own guns. My wife on the other hand owns a ton.

Well Brothers and Sisters........lets go back to the mid to late 1970's. Us Nam vets were all looked at as Baby Killers, Dopers and Nut Jobs of the first order!!! That is how we were played on TV shows, over and over. Only one show Magnum P I showed us Nam vets in a good light......All the other shows had us guys with PTSD (after 1982) running around killing people while having a Flash Backs or some other Bull Shit. We for the most part were put in the BAD spot light, in movies as well.

Now for the truth of it, I have never heard of a Nam vet with PTSD doing any of that shit for real!!! (Other than taking their own life.) However, I would say a few Nam vets that did not have PTSD, but in fact did have a mental psychiatric disorder, did in fact go off the reservation.....And hurt & kill some people over the years! And us Nam vets, were all to blame for it....

Now remember a some point we had over 2 million Nam vet's. (Note: we now have less than 700,000 left) Now I have said this before, out of the 2+ million Nam vets how many had Severe Chronic PTSD (I am one of them) or just PTSD??? If we were so f*cking BAD with Severe Chronic PTSD, how come Hanoi Jane (Jane Fonda) and John Kerry are still alive and well today???? I would say it's because Severe Chronic PTSD is not a mental illness....

Now for the idea the wife owns all the firearms in the house!!! Do some searching on that, even for non vets and you will find that said firearms have been taken out of the home even if the wife owns them. Confiscated is the correct word....If the husband is found to have a mental illness and or has been committed to any mental institution.”!!!!
