I'm not sure where to post this, so I just put it here. As some of you know, ive been having a rough time lately. I feel pretty unstable most days. Not suicidal. But like I'm one step away from a nervous breakdown. I almost admitted myself to a hospital last week. But I decided not to. But I went to my dr today and she discussed partial hospitalization with me. She wants me to consider it. Ive never been to it and I've never been hospitalized. So this is new to me. But I'm having such a hard time right now. I feel like I need extra help. Has anyone ever done partial hospitalization? Any advice or opinions??

I haven't done partial hospitalization for PTSD specifically, but have done it in the past for eating disorder and also my mix of symptoms (before they were connected to PTSD), which included the eating disorder, chemical dependency, and suicide attempts. It really depends on the program. But I think even a mediocre program is helpful if extra support is needed. The structure itself can be very helpful. You might also learn a few more tools for managing the stress you feel right now. It also lets you set that time aside and make it for you and your healing. So if a program is available and you feel like you don't have other resources that can adequately help you right now, I'd say give it a shot.

Can I ask if by 'partial hospitalization', you mean combined few days in-patient hospitalization with following weeklong trauma treatment centre stay, or something else?

It's a day program. I would go from 9-3 Monday thru Friday. I'm not sure if it's just for a week or more. But it's not as extensive as inpatient Because you can go home everyday

Thanks for the response! My psych said I'm having a hard time getting a hold of everything. And it's a smaller clinic so they can't offer anything extensive right now. She says partial can be such a great program. But it makes me so anxious even thinking about. Mostly because I have a hard time leaving home right now :(

Thank you for explaining.

In that case yes (to experience), although it didn't help me personally. The therapist I was in care of was incredibly kind and helpful and helped me with monitoring my emotional state, the sense of stability was comforting, but I found it didn't really address the issues I came to that crisis to. It worked more as a safety net, in my case, but not the kind of safety net that pings me back to functional, if it makes sense.

I hate that it didn't work for you! We have changed my meds. And if they don't help me, then I decided about the partial. I really hope the meds help me.

I have done partial hospitalization twice. Once it was not a good fit and the dr. actually called me in to say it was the wrong thing at the time. The second time I did as a temporary thing before going to residential treatment. It was really good that time with emphasis on coping skills, it was a really small group with 2 great therapists. I am sure like many other things it depends on the program, what their emphasis is, how big a group, what services offered. I hope that you find the support and help that you need at the moment.

Do it. If you have been considering hospitalization but are still functional, PHP is a great structure. You will learn things. And, if you worsen, you have a good structure in place to help you transition to inpatient.

I have done a few of them, and they were always useful, even if some days it seemed only useful at getting me out of the house - still, that's better than not. I think structure helps and PHP is a very solid structure.
