I was thinking about starting a book club, but wanted to know first if there was really enough support for it here.

A book club is a group of people who all buy and read a specific book, then talk about it, discuss aspects of the book, etc.

a. You have to be able to afford to buy the book, and
b. You have to read it in order to participate.

There are no limits on the type of books, as it would be a chit chat forum, not PTSD or supporter specific... so it could be a book on any topic.

Normally what happens, is the group agree on a specific book title, those that want to buy and read that book, go out and buy it, then you may set goals based on the length and depth of the book. If its PTSD related, then you may set a goal to read one chapter per week, then discuss it, work through aspects of it, etc etc.

If it's a 100 page short story, then obviously you normally just read it and then all discuss the angles, perceptions, opinions, etc of the books story and characters.

Usually it all depends on the book size and depth. Some book clubs meet every month, as they read more in-depth novels. Some meet weekly, as they only read short stories.

Being online, the book club can literally meet suited around your schedule, as you read responses and post when your time permits.

Great idea Anthony, love reading books mostly non fiction though. Apart from self help books like reading biography and auto biography. Look forward to it.

Definitely count me in. One enormous benefit of chronic insomnia is the huge amount of time that I have for such things, and reading is one of my favourite nighttime passtimes.

I am a confirmed starter if it goes ahead.

The genius boy wonder has another brilliant idea :D.

I'd love to take part, anyone know a cheap book shop:rolleyes:. Actually if you are in the UK, the Book People are quite good.

Oh, when can we start? How do we chose?

V sad, but this is really exciting.

As soon as I open the forum. I think we will need atleast two weeks to get it started, for everyone to order and receive their books... as to be perfectly honest, online books has near killed bookstores here in Australia. Then, when you order a book from them because they don't have it, they order it from America, goes to them, then they finally send it. Learnt that once, never again. It is quicker for me to get them from Amazon direct, as I have them within 10 - 14 days typically.

I will open a specific forum for it, and I guess the best way is to keep it simple, being people recommend the book they want to read, we vote on it, all go buy it, then read collectively as we agree upon.

I think we should probably also stay a book or two ahead with planning... so after the first order, we can all have the next book/s sitting around waiting to begin.

Me personally... I am up for reading anything. Most of what I read is trauma, psychology, counselling, PTSD based... and quite honestly, I don't think those style books are book club material, as there depth can be quite intrinsic. If others want to read self-help style books... then hey, again, I will read anything. I think they will take longer to discuss and work through though.

Then... time is not really an issue when this is being done globally via online.

My favorite book is the Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide. LOL I don't think that's good book club material either, as well as stuff by Kay Redfield Jamison.

And we got 2 day shipping with Amazon. We shop online a lot and my books are cheaper with them. :D

Anyway... I'll read anything someone puts in front of me. Can't wait!

I don't have time to join, but I'll throw a suggestion out to the group for a starter book. It's a classic that is pretty easy to read and can definitely stir discussion. . .and it is generally available at used book stores and on-line.

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. -- Breakfast of Champions.

This sounds like an activity that would be healthy to involve oneself in, my therapist and girlfriend would be pleased. Count me in!

As for the more complicated books, we can agree on an 'end of the quarter' book that is separate from a read that is of less content perhaps?
